Other Local Activities
Rotary clubs apply themselves to the betterment of others through 3 main areas of focus, namely Community Service, Vocational and Youth Service, and International Service. An emerging theme for our club for 2017-18 will be to address domestic violence. Below is a snapshot of assistance we currently provide.
Community Service
In addition to staging the much loved annual Christmas Carols at the Rotunda, running the Thrift Shop and sizzling sausages, our club forms partnerships and takes a range of initiatives to improve lives, including the financing of:
- Refurbishment and helping those at a local women’s shelter
- Salvos toilet block renovation
- Renovation of a derelict shed for use as a communal area at teenage refuge
- Red Cross course for refugees
- Breakfasts for kids at three different South Australian schools
- Hampers, toiletries and help with Salvos' lunch on Christmas Day
- Local community grants.
Vocational and Youth Service
In addition to the South Australian Police Officer of the Year award . . . there are vocational programs such as:
- Helping unemployed people find work
- Recognising the best of firms and employees among the businesses operating along Unley Road
And there are a range of youth ventures:
- Rotary Youth Program of Enrichment for 14-17 year olds
- Rotary Youth Leadership Awards for 18-25 year olds
- National Youth Science Forum for year 11 students in Canberra
- International Youth Exchange
- Support for programs such as Operation Flinders and Young Endeavour Foundation
International Service
In addition to the financial and management support provided for our overseas projects such as that in Peru, on the local front we:
- Prepare sanitary kits for girls in impoverished countries to enable them to attend school and participate in local activities
- Construct prosthetic hands for people injured by war in countries such as Cambodia and Sri Lanka
- Collect and despatch books and equipment for schools, hospitals and community facilities in East Timor
