President Trevor's Announcements
President Trevor commented on the District Assembly, pleased that Unley had a good showing at the event. See the section below.
Trevor advised that he attended the 36th birthday of the Unley Probus club. The meeting was informative, with lots of variety.
We will be having a special Assembly to discuss how we can implement changes to improve the operations of the Thrift Shop. This was a follow on from last week's Assembly where this was suggested. The meeting will consist of a number of small groups working on suggestions, these will be discussed in a later forum where action will be planned.
The Social Night is booked for the next meeting and lots of fun activities which include a ballroom dancing demonstration, Zumba, tall stories, a Singer, a Paper Plane contest and piano. Be there or be square.
Rotary Youth Program of Enrichment (RYPEN) - Jeevika Nagpal
Jeevika Nagpal, Rajat's daughter, came to the club to give her report on recent attendance at the RYPEN. Jeevika is in year 11 at Unley High School. The weekend was packed with information that will stand Jeevika in good stead for her future. She gave a run down on the key elements that had inspired her.
At the conclusion of her talk she thanked the club profusely for supporting and sponsoring her attendance.
President Trevor presented Jeevika with her certificate of achievement on the conclusion of her talk.
Rotary District 9520 - District Assembly
Held at Unity College, Murray Bridge on Sunday 5th May 2019. Attending were President Trevor, P
resident Elect Jason Booth, President Nominee Sorel Coward, Leonie Kewen, Brendan Kenny and Jerry Casburn. The programme was full, an opportunity to meet the incoming, and last, District Governor for District 9520, Tim Klar. With speakers on a range of Rotary topics, a great way for new Rotarians to find out about our organisation and its many facets.
Cottages for Country Care....
Our speaker,
Dianne Farrell, was introduced by Chair,
Valerie Bonython. Working for Cottages 4 care,
Dianne has been with them since 2008. Working both locally and overseas. She is very dedicated to her work and thoroughly enjoys her role. Integrity, loyalty and mateship are values Dianne lives by.
Originally known as Rosemary's Place, Cottages 4 Care was founded in 2008. The organisation provides accommodation for country families supporting patients needing hospital treatment in Adelaide. They own or rent a number of properties around the city, all with easy access to hospitals such as the Royal Adelaide. The first property was located in Rose Terrace, a good location for easy access to the city.
They have cottages Rose and Mary and later purchased Jane's cottage. They also rent another cottage, Dudley's cottage. A fifth cottage is being considered for purchase.
Fundraising is a key issue and while they receive some finance from the Patient Assistance Transport Scheme, this is minimal and they relay heavily on fund raising externally, and philanthropic donations.
All of the cottages are furnished to create a home away from home for patients and families who often struggle to afford support.
Unlike many other patient support schemes they provide accommodation for patients suffering from a multiplicity of diseases. Many others are specific e.g., cancer care only.
Dianne gave an excellent talk and was thanked, on behalf of the club, by Sorel Coward, the club expressed their gratitude by acclamation.
Spots
Judy Corcoron advised the club of the sad death of T J Anwar in Doha at the age of 17. T J was our Exchange student who went to France last year. Very sad, and sympathy was extended to her Mother Sonia, known to the club, and the remainder of her family.
Graham Beckett gave information on the last Mitre 10 BBQ with takings of $311, and, a profit of $255 was banked.
Wendy Andrews sought support for a Bridge night to be held at the centre at the corner of Young Street and Miller, on Sunday 2nd June 2019. This will be in conjunction with the Morialta Rotary club. Volunteers are needed, 2 to sell raffle tickets from 9.30am and 3 from 11.30am to help with food preparation and serving. proceedings will finish at around 2pm, with bridge playing to continue until 4pm. Raffle prizes are also sought, so if you have an unwanted gift or suitable item they it will be gratefully received. Profits will go to the Cancer Council. Volunteers/Gifts to be advised/provided to Wendy Andrews.
Valerie Bonython advised club members that all, have been provided with a book of raffle tickets for the raffle supporting the Pink Ribbon event. Members were asked to sell the book and if possible sell other books.
Mavis Martin advised the club of the Metropolitan Male Voice Choir's forthcoming concert on Sunday 18th August at the Adelaide Town Hall. There are a variety of ticket prices and more can be found out at:http://www.mmcsa.org/events/variety-2019/
Jerry Casburn asked for support for the McLaren Vale Rotary club, of which Briony Casburn is President Elect. The club is supporting a local winery in a major planting exercise and needs help in running a BBQ being held for volunteers on the day. Date is Sunday 18th June. Sorel Coward, Ken Haines and President Trevor have volunteered.
Jerry also sought support from club members for the Detmold BBQ early shift, details will be sent out to volunteers with where to go and at what time.
The Finale
The winner of the card draw, was the almighty President Trevor, was it a fix? And, the chocolates went to John Peacham.
Several happy and sad dollars. Reno Elms was the largest contributor, he wanted to spruik the Red Shield appeal last week but was passed over, no pun intended, (Unhappy), his son has just graduated with honours (Happy), survived the Sleepover last Friday to launch the Red Shield Appeal (Happy), was not able to provide sausages for the Mitre10 BBQ (Unhappy). Mavis Martin after 2 years is back on the road, driving that is, after having a couple of lessons to restore confidence (Happy). David Middleton not sure he was happy about Mavis's news.

2019-20 RI president announces his presidential theme

RI President-elect Mark Daniel Maloney announces the 2019-20 presidential theme, Rotary Connects

Maloney, a member of the Rotary Club of Decatur, Alabama, USA, unveiled the 2019-20 presidential theme, Rotary Connects the World, to incoming district governors at Rotary’s annual training event, the International Assembly, in San Diego, California, USA, on Monday.
“The first emphasis is to grow Rotary — to grow our service, to grow the impact of our projects, but most importantly, to grow our membership so that we can achieve more,” Maloney said.
Maloney believes that connection is at the heart of the Rotary experience.
“(Rotary) allows us to connect with each other, in deep and meaningful ways, across our differences,” Maloney said. “It connects us to people we would never otherwise have met, who are more like us than we ever could have known. It connects us to our communities, to professional opportunities, and to the people who need our help.”
Maloney also called on every Rotary and Rotaract club to identify segments of their community not represented in their club by creating a membership committee with diverse members.
“Through Rotary, we connect to the incredible diversity of humanity on a truly unique footing, forging deep and lasting ties in pursuit of a common goal,” he added. “In this ever more divided world, Rotary connects us all.”
Maloney urged leaders to offer alternative meeting experiences and service opportunities to make it easier for busy professionals and people with many family obligations to serve in leadership roles.
“We need to foster a culture where Rotary does not compete with the family, but rather complements it,” Maloney said. “That means taking real, practical steps to change the existing culture: being realistic in our expectations, considerate in our scheduling, and welcoming of children at Rotary events on every level.”
Maloney said many of the barriers that prevent people from serving as leaders in Rotary are based on expectations that are no longer relevant.
“It is time to adapt, to change our culture, and to convey the message that you can be a great district governor without visiting every club individually, and a great president without doing everything yourself.”

The Tale End.……
A little boy goes to his dad and asks, "What is politics?" The dad says, "Well son, let me try to explain it this way: I'm the breadwinner of the family, so let's call me capitalism. Your mother, she's the administrator of the money, so we'll call her the government. We're here to take care of your needs, so we'll call you the people. The nanny, we'll consider her the working class. And your baby brother, we'll call him the future. Now, think about that and see if that makes sense." The little boy goes off to bed thinking about what dad had said. Later that night, he hears his baby brother crying, so he gets up to check on him. He finds that the baby has soiled his diaper. The little boy goes to his parents' room and finds his mother sound asleep. Not wanting to wake her, he goes to the nanny's room. Finding the door locked, he peeks in the keyhole and sees his father in bed with the nanny. He gives up and goes back to bed. The next morning, the little boy says to his father, "Dad, I think I understand the concept of politics now." The father says, "Good son, tell me in your own words what you think politics is all about." The little boy replies, "Well, while capitalism is screwing the working class, the government is sound asleep, the people are being ignored and the future is in deep shit."
