President Trevor's Announcements
Trevor reflected on the injustice of the Tiananmen Square massacre 30 years ago.
He reported on his pleasure at attending the Unley City Council citizenship ceremony last Thursday when 31 people became Australian citizens....we should do more to promote our club in the packs provided by council.
He needs volunteers to BBQ at the Fullarton Community Centre on Friday 14 June at lunch time for a men's health function... Ken offered to manage this..
By popular acclaim, Trevor unravelled his life's journey......suitable for the ABC Australia Story. He was born in Berri into a family with 8 children. The age gap between his oldest brother and his twin sisters is 22 years. Life was a tad rudimentary with no electricity. His Dad who was a factory worker died at 53 placing major responsibility on a 16 yo Trevor to support his mother and younger twins. The best part of life was the river with fishing and bird nesting. Schooling was initially at Berri Primary with a class size of 51 and thence to Glossop High. Trevor was not impressed with the quality of the education he received in the Riverland.
In 1965, after 2 years at Western Teachers College, he was posted to a one teacher school at Nunjikompeter on the Eyre Peninsula teaching 17 kids (easy peasy) and where he slept in a caravan. The followed year he scored a posting as head teacher at Monarto Junction with 31 students.....marriage followed. In 1967 he was appointed to a 2 teacher school at Gawler River for 3 years. Country teacher placements must have been diabolically chaotic way back then. For 22 years he studied part time to lift his qualifications from certificate to diploma to graduate diploma and then to B Ed. His two major appointments were as principal of Clare and Seacliff Primary Schools.
Trevor has two daughters and 5 grandchildren. One of his happiest experiences was motoring through Europe with his family in 1980. He loves to travel with Peru being his favourite destination (6 visits already and another shortly). He joined the Rotary Club of Stirling in 2006.
Trevor was thanked by rapturous applause.
Mavis Martin had Reno volunteer to take her place on 'meet and greet' next Tuesday.
Wendy Andrews thanked those who volunteered and donated raffle prizes to the Bridge fundraising event last Sunday with RC Morialta. It was a success.....$1000 from the proceeds will be donated to Cancer Care in Unley.
Sorel Coward participated on the BBQ in the RC McLaren Vale biodiversity tree planting program last Sunday. With 120 volunteers 12,000 trees were planted. The particular species of tree helps ward off insects from the vines. Volunteers are needed for a BBQ on Sunday 16 at McLaren Vale for a repeat exercise. There will be a Days for Girls session at Aberfoyle Park on June 15.

- attended the Bunnings thank you last Thursday and received a certificate of appreciation......they are looking for volunteers for Halloween.....some members would require a minimum of make-up.
- Pam Trimmer is having Graham Ey demonstrate the operation of the defibrillator at the volunteers meeting tomorrow; the machine has been borrowed from West Beach Life Saving Club....who may not need it until the sand is replenished.
- two tables have been booked for club members at the Pink Ribbon morning tea.
The Finale
Card sharp John Russell again won the big bucks, this time with a 5 of diamonds. There was considerable happiness with football and other sporting results. On a less positive note, Sorel reported on a hemorrhoid operation which was a bummer and Bob Mullins had his Merc cleaned up outside the Thrift Shop.
The meeting closed at 7.50pm.....to be followed by committee meetings.

“After I moved from Israel to Denmark, my life felt like it was missing something. I was successful at what I was doing. I have a great family and a lot of friends. I realized that in order to get fulfillment in life, I needed to contribute to something bigger.
“My father-in-law is a Rotarian and suggested I join. I thought Rotary was mostly old men who sat around and smoked cigars. Later that year, though, when I was visiting Israel, I became intrigued. Poliovirus had been found in the southern part of Egypt in 2013, and I saw in the media that there were tons of children standing in line to get drops of polio vaccine. I saw that the people doing that were not doctors, they were people with yellow vests. I found out these people with yellow vests were actually Rotarians.
“It really touched my heart. I found my purpose. When I returned to Denmark, I partnered with the expat community and started a new English-speaking international club. I’ve made so many friends in Rotary and I simply love it. I am looking forward to making more lifelong friends at the Rotary Convention this year in Hamburg.
“I couldn’t let that hunger in me to do something about polio eradication die, so I produced wristbands for children that say “Bye Bye Polio.” The fundraiser and other efforts were a beautiful success. My next polio activity involves public speaking. I’ve put together a presentation that I can offer to Rotary clubs who would like to have greater insight about what Rotary and our partners are doing, and why we need to continue fundraising. It’s something I’m very passionate about. I don’t feel like I’m selling the idea of making a donation. I feel like I’m taking people on a journey we all belong to.”
