Announcements by President Graham
Graham thanked the staff of Damien's for their first rate service and presented a box of home-made chocolates to be shared. We all applauded.
Annual General Meeting
Treasurer Jerry Casburn presented a comprehensive report of 2019/20 club finances. In a nutshell income for the year was about $103,981.87 and expenses close to $121,250.06 which meant we incurred a deficit of exactly $17,268.19.....well planned and executed. The Thrift Shop made a profit of $19,811.17.....a reasonable result given the loss of 2 months trading due to Covid. Receipts for this year are stronger. And the really good news is that the membership account is in the black to the tune of $360. Net assets stand at $67,259.30 which will be further reduced this year.

President Graham undertook to provide members with a copy of the District's Youth Protection Policy and Crisis Management Policy.
International - John Peacham
Today a group comprising Fay (plus friend Andrew), Paul, Haytham, and he had been loading the 20ft container for the Solomon Islands. More help will be needed on Thursday from 8.30am at Donations In Kind at Salisbury
Vocational - Leonie Kewen
The District citation expressing appreciation for the efforts of SAPOL during the bushfires and Covid crises was presented to the SA Commissioner of Police on 30 September. Pride of Work will be running early next year with a presentation date of 30 March.
Community - Robyn Carnachan
Activities have been suspended due to Covid. Two projects to be pursued in 2021 are OpenLight and Treasure Boxes. Bob Mills has been involved in the making of 50 bird shelter boxes for farms and other areas impacted by the bushfires in the Adelaide Hills.
Rotary Foundation - Jerry Casburn
An Unley team looked after the Rotary End Polio Now ute last Thursday at Aggies. It then went to Stirling. Last year the club donated $23,000 to the Foundation. Benefits include grants for projects like that for the Solomons.
Christina Way reported that the stamp collecting efforts of our club to benefit The Road Home (an organisation supporting the well-being of veterans) will be recognised in their magazine next February as will a story about her grandfather.
Club Consultations.....whereto now with club activities and projects
President Graham related a story about how his club in Penrith had built a motel at a cost of nearly $900k to accommodate parents and carers of children being treated for cancer. And Bob Mullins had recalled the club working a soup kitchen during winter and providing food parcels for struggling individuals and families.
Reno Elms responded with news about the van recently acquired to be used throughout the community to better connect with those in need. The club can utilise this van. Last year the Unley Salvos delivered 150 food parcels to struggling families. He would like our club to again join in a meal at the Unley premises.
Topics raised included:
- club visits to factories (somewhat inhibited because most close at night)
- more community involvement including further assistance for the Baptist Care project
- working with other clubs and outside our decidedly better off area
- working to build opportunities for young people through sport
- liaison with other sponsors like the Bendigo Bank
- mental health support
- communicating at every opportunity about what we achieve eg with visitors to Thrift Shop and the sausage sizzles
From the editor's point of view, the club can be proud of its efforts. We are fortunate to have a number of dedicated and spirited members who make things happen. BUT we need to continue to refresh, diversify and set ourselves new challenges. Engaging with the broader community is perhaps our greatest challenge.
Spots
Trevor McGuirk urged the club to find additional storage as the Thrift Shop is in overload. The front verandah of the TS needs to be cleaned up and there needs to be more outside advertising . Proceeds from the book sale on Sunday were $270.
Patsy Beckett urged greater participation in the Mitre 10 fortnightly BBQ and circulated a roster. Graham reported that $356 had been banked from last Saturday's effort.
Christina Way would have preferred not to have a guest speaker at the TS Christmas event as it cut across getting to know other volunteers better.
Valerie Bonython is still tracking down raffle books and cash as the draw is next Sunday. It is expected that about $2600 will be raised for prostate cancer.
Jerry Casburn listed the names of those participating in the wine labelling next Saturday and Penny's Hill Winery
Trevor McGuirk undertook to provide the Board with ideas on other fundraising options and sponsorship. He would like to see the return of the weekly toasts to Rotary International.
Finale
The winner of the big bucks was Vera-Ann, and Paul snagged the fruchocs.....maybe a ban of one year is needed on newbies collecting the loot.
Needless to say we ran a tad past the witching hour.
A busy week for the club
The Thrift Shop Christmas Thank-you for Volunteers
Wednesday 2nd December at Damien on Fisher
The meeting was opened by Pam Trimmer who welcomed the volunteer team. President Graham Beckett expressed the thanks of the club for the volunteer’s effort and that the money raised helped fund the many projects both locally and overseas. He mentioned the recent successful project in Peru and the forthcoming one in the Solomons.
Pam then introduced Adam Hooper (see photo) who congratulated the club on its support for Openlight, as part of TocH. Adam outlined how Openlight operated and spoke specifically about a new initiative Camp 38. This special camp was run at Victor Harbor and provided support for families with children suffering autism. He outlined the activities aimed at all members of the family, parent, siblings and the autistic children.
Pam then concluded the celebration with a further thanks to the volunteers. She advised those present of the shop’s success and the fact that profits year to date were up by 16%. Volunteers were advised of opening times over Christmas.
Food and drinks abounded and the food catering was expertly provided by Damien.
Graham then finished by thanking Pam for all her efforts across this key fundraiser for the club.
End Polio Now Ute Relay

The editor took photos of the ute with Chris and Paul and the iron lung, but messy result.....just use your imagination and suggest ideas for who best fits the old adage.....couldn't work in an iron lung!
Book sale at the Thrift Shop
Sunday 6 December from 9am-1pm
Trevor and Madeliene (left) carted tonnes of books from his garage and set them up outside and in front of the former Finos premises. Virginia looked after the till and some of us including Pam did some sorting out the back.
Last time in perfect weather we did big trade with many pulled from the line-up at Pickle in the Middle. This time it was a bit cooler and soggier.... but we still made a few handy bucks. Trevor is anxious to clear his garage of all these highly prized novels!
