Congraulations once again to last week's Paul Harris awardees, Patsy Beckett, Valerie Bonython, Pam Trimmer, Greg Mcleod and Dennis Liddle.

Club Consultations: 2019/20 Priorities

To open the discussion, Jason explained that the challenges for Rotary today are little different than they were 10 years ago. and we continue to apply similar formulae to address the issues. His definition of insanity goes something like this...'continually doing the same thing but expecting better outcomes'. We need new approaches and a better way of measuring the outcomes eg via Survey Monkey.

Incoming DG Tim Klar has charged every club with developing a signature project. Jason suggests that this should be within the Unley community, should enable strong publicity for the club and be as hands-on as possible. Jason felt there was merit in developing an eisteddfod festival with the local secondary schools. He called for other ideas from the floor.

Sorel Coward extolled a more intimate involvement with Cottages 4 Country Care which provides accommodation for needy country people  (and their families) receiving hospital treatment in Adelaide. We can help in a hands-on way with daily needs as well as be part of a campaign to provide more accommodation.

Robyn Carnachan expressed pleasure at the support we had provided for Treasure Boxes for Kids in the form of the trailer and warehouse shelving. When they move to their new premises in Edwardstown they will need more help with shelving, plus we could asssist in a hands-on way by doing pick-ups and deliveries..

Reno Elms expressed appreciation for the club's strong and effective performance with its many projects. He  felt there was merit in expanding the Pride of Workmanship Awards to the whole of Unley.

Fay Reid explained her passion for helping the people of the Solomon Islands in combatting disease, providing clean water and better sanitation, reducing poverty, and helping women and children living in difficult conditions. She would like to see our club help with this endeavour. In a similar vein, Judi Corcoran mentioned her daughter's work in Nepal.

Patsy Beckett raised the potential of fund raising through collection of stamps (ala Victorian woman recently retired) and travel endorsement bonus for Pink Ribbon with Phil Hoffman. She and Valerie have been working on a large environmental project...…..carp.

Valerie Bonython and PDG Kim Harvey had discussed a District carp fishing competition which would attract many anglers, eliminate truck loads of carp and raise a lot of money. It could be planned for next year at Mawson Lakes. In relation to big picture projects that this or other fundraising could be linked to, there is an outstanding need for a children's hospice in South Australia, the only State without one. 

A number of other contributions were made:

•  about existing signature projects of the club (like POOTY, Carols at the Rotunda, Pride of Workmanship etc). As David Middleton explained; each project began with a champion within the club...which is the way to get things done.
• about picking areas as yet untouched by organisations such as ours
• about getting our hands dirty by supporting individuals on the ground
• about POOTY which will eventually become a whole of emergency services series of awards

Jason thanked the contributors. Next week these and other topics will be discussed in committees. When fundraising we need to inform people how the money raised will be spent to give them greater appreciation of the value of their contributions. There will be a 3 month trial of a meetings running sheet for each table.

Stephen Baker reported that Pam Trimmer had had to endure another round of surgery. She is hoping to be discharged from Ashford Hospital early next week...…….all our fingers are crossed.

Bob Mills reported that Honorary member and club stalwart Ken Daly had suffered a stroke and was in the RAH.

Thank you for a wonderful year Rotaractors

Time has really flown by. As the Rotary year draws to a close, I wanted to take this opportunity to reflect on all that we’ve accomplished together.

When I started my year as president of Rotary, I set a number of goals that I hoped Rotary clubs all over the world would strive to achieve. One significant goal was important, but simple: double Rotaract.

I realize that was quite a lot to ask clubs. But there’s a reason why I didn’t ask Rotary clubs to simply grow Rotaract. I chose the goal of doubling Rotaract because it gave us something specific to reach for, and I believed that whatever we managed to accomplish this year would still be significant.

And we have done exactly that. Since 1 July 2018, we have started 1,148 new Rotaract clubs around the world (as of 24 June), with 24,254 new Rotaractors. These numbers are growing every day. I am so impressed by this growth. In the process, we raised awareness among Rotarians of the power and potential of Rotaract. In addition, we have also worked to increase engagement and gather feedback from Rotaractors.

 

Last, but certainly not least, an important piece of legislation was approved during the Council on Legislation that now includes Rotaract clubs as a membership type of Rotary International. I championed this item because I believed it was the best way to make Rotaractors our equal partners in service. This will also help lay the foundation for emphasizing and growing Rotaract as a critical part of Rotary, while still allowing for the unique experience that Rotaract clubs provide.

To Rotaractors around the world: I am so glad I got to meet so many of you. You have all truly inspired and motivated me throughout the year. I traveled to over 55 countries in the last year and everywhere I went, I was met with the same level of energy and enthusiasm. I will always look back fondly on this year, including all the selfies we took together. And to those of you I didn’t get the chance to meet, I hope our paths cross someday. Thank you for all that you do and all that I hope you continue to do, as you continue on your journey as a part of the family of Rotary. Most importantly, thank you for being the inspiration.
