Trevor presented newly elected Unley Mayor Michael Hewitson with his certificate as an honorary member of our club.. see opposite

There are 2 boxes of wine left unsold from the wine bottling last Saturday.

Inductions by District Governor
Christina Way
Heather Kilsby introduced Christina who has a passion for helping the elderly and keeping them in their own homes. Christina was employed by Werribee Council and more recently by ECH. Her pursuits include music, film, and socialising with friends.
Christina was assigned to the Community Service Committee, will bear the vocational designation of Community Care, and be mentored by Heather Kilsby.
John Kikkert
Stephen Baker introduced John who was born in Amsterdam and came to Australia at the age of 15. He studied at Adelaide University completing a Doctorate in Spectroscopy.
His early career involved research and development in the mining and metals industry. Following work at the Australian Mineral Development Laboratories he worked for Philips in Europe where he was responsible for the development of X-Ray equipment.
John wanted his family to grow up in Australia and he resigned to continue his career back here. He managed a group of laboratories and in recent years assisted three technology companies in building their businesses and managed their acquisition by larger international companies. He is now fully retired and enjoys travel with his lovely wife Karen. He plays contract bridge, has 3 sons and 7 grand-children
John wants to join Rotary to contribute to the community.

John was assigned to the International Committee, will bear the vocational designation of Technical Services Mining, and be mentored by Stephen Baker.
Christina and John were enthusiastically welcomed into the club.
Guest Speaker: District Governor Kim Harvey
DG Kim began by asking PP Heather Kilsby to accept the RI President's Citation for the club's significant contribution to the Rotary Foundation in 2017/18....we were among 1575 clubs across the globe (and the second in our district) to be so recognised. Kim also presented the Fred Claridge District Award for our contribution.
Kim launched into her speech by saying Thank You to all who give of their time and effort through Rotary. Her meeting with our Board earlier had been fruitful.
Much of the speech was about the year's theme namely Be The Inspiration....President Barry Rassin wants as all to LEAP (another b.....y acronym) with Love, Enthusiasm, Audaciousness and with Proof. The three focus areas are engaging with/nurturing young leaders, environmental action, and positive experience.
The District 9520 Strategic Plan includes:
- support and strengthen clubs.....and consider establishment of a satellite club
- increase humanitarian service through finance, hands on experience and community corps
- lift our public profile, increase awareness and showcase our good deeds.
In a nutshell we should inspire, connect and transform...our core values do not change, but the way we operate must adapt to the changing world.
The DG has a new People of Action car to replace the much loved ute, and this can be used for Rotary events. On 1 July 2019, Districts 9500 and 9520 will combine into 9510. Kim mentioned the upcoming GSE and was pleased to see Rose Linh Le nominated by Unley in our audience. The District Conference in Broken Hill 5-7 April next year will be bigger than Ben Hur and Mad Max, with a fabulous array of speakers and entertainment. RI President Rassin wants us to be the inspiration for positive change with courage, optimism and creativity. Whew....the message is fine but think our RI President is an adjective/adverb addict...….tis time to stop this new theme each year.....perhaps we could revert to only one..... and the best ever was......SEW THE SEADS OF LOVE?

Jason Booth announced a change of plans for our meeting on 11 December.....but still clouded in mystery
Sorel Coward spoke about hosting the GSE team from Kansas City from 12-16 April 2019 and elicited support from Mavis and Christina to each look after a team member. Sorel will be going into hospital in Melbourne next week for a complex operation.....our thoughts are with her.
The Finale
The cards were drawn and a remarkable outcome.....our two new inductees John and Christina scored the first two prizes [in context, if you had bet on that result before-hand the bookies would have offered odds of between 600 and 2000 to one, depending on how many cards they each bought]. Trailing not far behind in the prize stakes were Rosslyn Hewitson, Stephen the elder and Rhonda Hoare. John Peacham is pleased to be heading to Cambodia to look after cows. Shortly, like tomorrow, Patsy and Chad should be celebrating birthdays and Stephen the younger was inducted.
Trevor earned heaps of overtime tonight as the curtain fell at 8.25pm...….perhaps we should introduce a presidential penalty system requiring push ups to the number of minutes running late.

Mixing food, fun, and Rotary service in Nagoya
Judy Ongg, actress, singer and Rotary celebrity ambassador for polio eradication, takes part in the festivities.

We held our sixth annual World Food and Fureai Festival 27-28 October in a park in downtown Nagoya (fureai is a Japanese word meaning interaction). Under a beautiful autumn sky, more than 70,000 people gathered for an outdoor food festival featuring foods from around the world, presentations about Rotary’s humanitarian work, and entertainment. We broke our record for ticket sales and onsite donations.
One of the great things about this event is that all the Rotary family in our district participates and collaborates to make it successful, which draws us all closer by the end of the event. We had about 50 “This Close” photo displays scattered around the park to help us enhance Rotary’s image in our community.
Judy Ongg, actress, singer, author and Rotary celebrity ambassador for polio eradication, played a significant role this year. She not only made an inspiring speech on stage, but also joined us at our End Polio Now booth encouraging the public to make a contribution to eradicate polio. She also attended our charity dinner, which attracted more than 200 Rotarians, including members from Pakistan, the Philippines, and Indonesia.
Every year, we have been donating the proceeds to help eradicate polio and for humanitarian aid for children in Asian countries like Cambodia, Myanmar, Indonesia and the Philippines. This year, we are dividing the proceeds between the PolioPlus Fund and “Health and Education Units” in Pakistan. These units are equipped with 1,500 books, an LED screen, White Board, tablets equipped with Skype, and refrigerated units to store polio vaccine.
Our district is also grateful to past governor Faiz Kidwai from District 3271 Pakistan for his presentation about the work to eradicate polio in Pakistan during the charity dinner. All of us are deeply impressed with knowing how hard and determined the Rotarians in Pakistan are working to eradicate polio. Yes, we are “This Close.”
