President Trevor's Announcement
Trevor welcomed our guests. His announcements included:
- a brief Board meeting at the end of this meeting
- exhortation for more members to sign up for the District Conference in Broken Hill
- a request from Pam Trimmer for a club member to attend a course to check electrical appliances and avoid the prohibitive cost of certifying electricals for the Thrift Shop....Chad Leader, excited by fatherhood for the second time, volunteered.
- Jerry is preparing for his super cruise on the Queen Mary in hospital.

Health of the River - Jordan Norman
Leonie Kewen introduced Jordan who had been sponsored by our club to attend the Rotary Health of the River Forum, run by Districts 9520 and 9500, in November 2018. He was one of 4 students from Urrbrae High School who joined 12 students from other schools at Calperum.
Jordan, now a year 9 student, explained that he is passionate about the environment and has been involved in a tree planting program in Brownhill Creek. While there is no specific environment course at Urrbrae he belongs to an environmental group and has a personal interest in healthy rivers and wetlands. He was grateful for the trip to Calperum where he learnt about the Black Box Tree health program and efforts to restore degraded river environments. He thanked Rotary for this opportunity and indicated he would be pursuing a career in ecology.
Jordan was applauded for his presentation.
Guest Speaker: Cath O'Loughlin - Childhood Cancer Association
Valerie introduced Cath who began her career as a lawyer at Minter Ellison in 1986. 12 years later she was appointed as CEO of Australian Executor Trustee......which then led to her appointment as SA's Public Trustee. In 2009 she became CEO of CCA.
Cath explained that on average 54 children in South Australia are diagnosed with cancer each year......12 have relapses after treatment and 8 die. Last year unfortunately 19 died.
Dr Michael Rice AM has been dedicated to helping kids with cancer for 50 years. In 1982 he recognised that while the treatment was effective there was insufficient support for children and their families. He established the Childhood Cancer Association in1982 to meet this need.
CCA looks after 400 families, employs 2 full time psychologists and provides a range of 30 services:
- over 1500 contacts with families each year
- 900 nights of accommodation......important for those coming from remote areas and NT
- 200 days of respite at 'Bradley's Place' in Inman Valley to help recovery
- 200 family counselling sessions
- in addition there are programs to support siblings 4 times a year, bereavement support for families and grandparents, kids tutoring to catch up with homework, financial support and Elliot Bear buddy therapy
CCA operates on a modest budget of $1m per annum with 93c in the dollar applied directly to clients. It self funds through small and large fundraisers (including Telethon) and donors who continue to help. Effort is being made to get government funding to strengthen existing and enable new services directed at the physical and mental well being (survivorship) of affected kids, and school programs. There are a number of organisations providing assistance to cancer sufferers and their families eg Ronald McDonald House. The Women's and Children's Hospital directs patients and their families to the most suitable organisation.
Greg Mcleod gave the vote of thanks and Cath was roundly applauded.

Leonie Kewen reported that the program for the Kansas City GSE team had been finalised but we are still looking for one more hosting offer.
Christina Way has returned from a trip to Thailand where she attended a meeting of the Rotary Club of Don Muang....Trevor received their club banner from Christina.
Sorel Coward vowed to over-compensate for Jerry's absence overseas (and she did):
- commended Jordan for his address and related her experience with the program at Calperum to monitor the health of black box trees with environmental flows......we need more members involved
- explained that ill-health could well prevent her from hosting a Kansas GSE visitor
- thanked members and particularly Christina for thoughtfulness during recent challenges.
The Finale
Great piece of manipulation......Fay Reid won the card pull with a lousy 3 of hearts (further inducement to join the club) and Greg McLeod had to be prompted (time for a hearing test) to claim the second prize chocolates with a much better card.
Best story of the night came from Mavis who has recruited a miniature poodle called HAMISH to keep her busy and house tidy.

Looking back at 10 years of riding to end polio

Roughly 10 years ago, Rotarian Michael J. Harris of the Casas Adobes Rotary was debating ways to help small Rotary clubs take advantage of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation’s 2:1 match for contributions to PolioPlus. For some time, Mike had also lobbied Perimeter Bicycling to allow Rotary to field a team in El Tour de Tucson as one of the ride’s “beneficiaries.” He thought that would be a great opportunity for clubs large or small. Mike could not have imagined what his pet project would become. Or, knowing Mike, maybe he could.
Mike left us in 2011—way too early, and too soon to see his dream bear fruit.
Ten years ago a loose association of Rotarians fielded a team that rode in El Tour and raised about $10,000, or $30,000 if you include the Gates match. Fast forward to November 2018. Eighty-five cyclists came to Tucson from as far away as France and Australia to Ride to End Polio and teams from as far away as Mongolia participated on stationary bikes in homes and gyms around the world. All told the 2018 participants raised $5,732,550 including the match. Cumulatively since Mike birthed the concept the ride has raised over $53.3 million. It is hard to know the impact of the ride, but it is safe to say there are a lot of children walking around today that need not fear this terrible disease as a result of what the district has achieved.
During the past decade the Ride to End Polio has gained in popularity and notoriety. Since 2012, Rotary’s General Secretary John Hewko has participated in the ride and his global reach supercharged our fundraising. In fact, in a tribute to his fundraising success, the 2013 El Tour de Tucson named John as the Dedication Recipient. Cyclists have joined us in Tucson from the Philippines, Germany, Canada, France, Brazil and Australia and from a dozen states.
Several years ago Darrell Stewart and Chris Harris collaborated to produce what is known as “the Harris Trophy.” see here Each year the most successful fundraisers’ names are engraved on the trophy, which sits just outside the office of the General Secretary at Rotary headquarters in Evanston, Illinois.
The Ride to End Polio is nothing without the many volunteers that contribute to the effort. A volunteer committee plans and manages the ride each year. The Marana Rotary coordinates the aid station that serves thousands of cyclists looking for a drink, a snack or someone to hold their bike while they take a quick break. Other volunteers staff a booth at the El Tour finish line providing food, drink, massage, and a seat in the shade for weary cyclists.
Most agree that the Ride to End Polio has evolved into one of the most successful single fund-raising events in the history of Rotary. While we cannot make that claim with certainty, what is certain is that District 5500 and the Ride to End Polio have made an enormous contribution to the eradication of polio and to the elimination of suffering in the world.
