Welcome

President John opened the meeting, welcomed our guests and handed the stage over to David.

Guest Speaker: David Pisoni MP - My life in politics

David reflected on his childhood and how he became a Liberal MP, and then a State Government Minister.

He was raised in Salisbury with an ambition to become a tradie, with first priority being the obtaining of an apprenticeship.......which he did in 1979 by quitting school and joining a furniture making company. He liked the idea of becoming well qualified and operating his own business. His interest in politics was heightened by having to operate in a challenging economic climate and survive the strictures of government decision making. In this environment his poltical interests lay with the party supporting private enterprise. Furniture making was his bread and butter, and politics his recreation.

After an usuccessful attempt for Liberal preselection in the 1990s, he was picked to contest the 2006 election in Unley.....which he won at a challenging time for the Party. From 2018 - 2022 he was a Minister in the Marshal Liberal Governmnet. There were many satisfying moments including the lifting of apprenticeships from 15,000 to 30,000 by addressing areas of greatest skill shortages with support for on-the-job training...meeting the needs of business rather than filling TAFE courses. That successful approach has now been reversed. Lot 14 fulfilled the vision for innovation and is the largest such hub in Australia. Capital was provided for scientific research and innovation in partnership with business.

The most difficult of times was during Covid. SA however gained the enviable reputation of having the fewest deaths per capita and the quickest economic recovery of any State because it kept many businesses alive during the pandemic. When he was In Opposition, the most telling experience came in 2012  when he made public the details of serious child abuse in the State system. This prompted a Royal Commission.

David's headline act can be summed up as - From Cabinet Maker to Cabinet Minister.

David was applauded for his contribution.

Ceremonials

President John presented a Paul Harris Fellow sapphire pin to Virginia Cossid for her financial support (US$1000) to Rotary International. Virginia was previously awarded a PHF for her contribution to the club at changeover.

Inductions

In a bumper night, perhaps never previously reflected in the annals of our club's history, there were 4 membership inductions by President John: Alice Edge from the Salvation Army was joined by former members of RC McLaren Vale, namely Janet Rice, Jo Baxter and Bronwyn Kenny. Due to time constraints, the introductions were kept very brief. More details will unfold in the coming weeks.

Alice Edge
Virginia Cossid, her nominator, provided the following detail. Alice grew up in country Victoria and has worked for the Salvos for the last 9 years in Melbourne, Gold Coast, Wollongong, Kaniva, Kadina and now at Unley as the Corps Officer. She is passionate about creating inclusive places where people can find healthy community, encounter God and other people in a way that best suits them. This is the life she loves. Her recreation includes studying Big Bang Theory and the Vicar of Dibley plus hanging out with Peanut her dog.

Alice will join the Community Service Committee, be mentored by Judy Barton and carry the occupational designation of Salvation Army Officer.

New members from RC McLaren Vale

Spots

President John reported that he will be attending a workshop on Sunday about the new Rotary structure. On Sunday 14 Spetember we will be supporting a Volunteers Day at Bunnings in conjunction with other clubs. This will be the same day as the Walk Against Domestic Violence down King William Street which we must also support. On 6 September, starting 10 am, Bronte Harrington will be presenting a history of Goodwood at the Goodwood Community Centre..

Rhonda Hoare mentioned the working bee last Friday in Tommy's Garden (Tommy was a much loved elephant of Unley) at Unley Primary School, in preparation for the Rotary Peace Pole insertion on 6 August....see Rogues' Gallery below. She recruited a small team to paint the woodwork there next Saturday morning at 10.30am.

Chris Davis announced:
  • The presentation of the Pride of Work Award will be Tuesday 6 August at Jacks (Barzaar)
  • A nomination for SA Police Officer of the Year has been made to the Police Commissioner and the ceremony will be held at the Jubillee Pavillion of Wayville Showgrounds on 6 September
  • The teachers award is progressing

Finale

What must be done when there is a strict instruction, endorsed by all but one attendee, that the President shall under no circumstances allow Greg McLeod to win the raffle......but he did!!!!!! And Graham Beckett followed up last week's win with the chocolates.

The meeting closed on time after a bare joke.

ROGUES' GALLERY

Last Friday was a tad soggy. But Rhonda, Ross and Stephen splattered along to prepare the garden at Unley Primary School for the Rotary Peace Pole. The photo below shows landscaper Eugene, Unley Primary Principal Amy Reid, Rhonda and Ross. And thank goodness we were joined by this great group of young people who did most of the wheel-barrowing of sand, stones and mulch. Twas good!.

Rotary International News

Leading with Peace

Posted on

By Olayinka Hakeem Babalola, 2019-20 RI Vice President and 2018-20 Rotary International Director

Ihave been involved with Rotary for more than 40 years, beginning as a Rotaractor in 1983 and transitioning to a Rotarian in 1993. My journey in peacebuilding started from two fronts: my deep commitment to community service and my involvement in Rotary’s structured peace initiatives. As a member of the Rotary Club of Trans Amadi, Port Harcourt, Nigeria, in District 9141, I have held numerous leadership positions including as club president, district governor, and past Rotary International director.
My passion for peacebuilding was sparked during my university days in Nigeria where we leveraged Rotaract to implement community improvement projects. This passion was further awakened when I became a regional Rotary Foundation coordinator (RRFC). In this role, I realized that while Rotary’s focus areas were being addressed, peacebuilding was not as actively engaged by Rotarians. This observation led me to prioritize and advocate for more intensive peacebuilding activities within Rotary.

Through my role as an RRFC, I began to understand that many Rotarians and Rotary clubs were unsure how to engage in peacebuilding. They often lacked the necessary skills and capacity. To address this, I connected Rotary Peace Fellows with their respective districts to share their expertise and experiences. These interactions were crucial in demystifying peacebuilding and demonstrating practical ways Rotarians could contribute to this important cause, knowing that for more than 25 years, Rotary members have been investing in the Rotary Peace Centers program. Because of that commitment, more than 1,800 Rotary Peace Fellows have been trained through our peace centers to work in peace and development across the globe.

Past RI Vice President Olayinka Babalola leads a discussion on the Pillars of Positive Peace.
During this journey and hunger for learning more, I became a Rotary Positive Peace Activator. This program, developed by Rotary International in partnership with the Institute for Economics and Peace, emphasizes the eight pillars of Positive Peace. These pillars provide a comprehensive framework for creating an environment where peace can flourish. I was invited to the East Africa Positive Peace Activators program as a guest and that inspired us to start the expansion of the program to West & Central Africa cohort, where I was trained and became a Rotary Peace Activator.
During my involvement with the Rotary Peace Center at Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda, I’ve had the privilege of engaging with Rotary Peace Fellows. These fellows undergo extensive training and return to their communities to implement Social Change Initiatives, later sharing their progress and challenges. This hands-on approach is vital in fostering a practical understanding of peacebuilding.
On a personal level, my engagement with the Positive Peace framework has profoundly influenced my interactions and leadership style. For instance, in my community, we applied the framework to understand and address issues such as school absenteeism, which was linked to unsafe routes frequented by drug dealers. By addressing the root causes, we created a safer environment for students, working with neighbors and understanding local governance.
My journey in peacebuilding with Rotary has been one of continuous personal and professional learning and active engagements. Rotary projects provide training that fosters understanding and provides communities with the skills to resolve conflicts and I believe that building capacity for peacemaking at every level is crucial and more needed than ever before.

I am optimistic about the future and remain committed to creating a world where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
