President Heather's Announcements
1. Sheila Evans is home from hospital and is on a slow road to recovery. The club's thoughts are with
Sheila.
2. Maria Galatsanos is currently establishing a committee to run the next Unley Pink Ribbon event and has
formed a committee to put this together, Currently only one male on the team, Graham Beckett, more
male interest was sought and Ken Haines volunteered.

1. Jerry Casburn updated the club on notification of meeting attendance. A detailed explanation is shown
below:
Meeting Notification
As members will know that our advice to Damiens of numbers of attendees is important, this ensures that everyone gets a meal, that if needed we get the larger room and they are prepared for our being there.
Prompted by David Middleton, who asked if there was a way of reporting attendance via ClubRunner. We have completed some research. There is an event management module and we could use on a regular basis.
Following successful use of the application this will now become a weekly event.
An eMail will be sent to your home eMail address, this will have a prompt to create a password, complete this and login. You will then be an active member of Unley Rotary.
If you are an active member of Unley Rotary, or, regularly attend meetings, you will receive an email with the title “Event Invitation for Rotary Meeting 16th January 2018” giving details about our next meeting. At the bottom of the email you will see: “Attend or Decline as” followed by your name. Click on the link and it will take you to a ClubRunner page for the event. At the bottom of the page you have the opportunity to “Register Me” and register a guest.
Only click on register me if you intend to be at the meeting. Registrations close at 6pm on Sunday 14th January, if you have changes after that you will need to call me.
If you are bringing a guest click on “Register a Guest”. You will be asked to provide first and last name and a contact email. The latter is a mandatory field but you can put your own email.
We will repeat this for the following week and we will see how it works out. If followed this could resolve any issues with attendance and ensure we are giving Damiens the right information.
You can change registration by going to the home page, clicking on the event in the "Upcoming Events" section on the bottom left of the page and changing registration for members or guests.

N.B. If you have not received an email on January 11th, you are not on the list, which could be Jerry's mistake. Either way, if you intend to come to the meeting please advise me by close of play on Sunday.
2. Pam Trimmer advised the club of updates provided by Chrissy Solistyo, who spoke on the House of Ruth and Naomi which provides support to families of condemned Indonesians. $200 has been spent providing Christmas parcels to families living on the local tips and $300 has provided and oven for the House which will allow the baking of cakes for sale to raise more money. David Middleton proposed donating a further $500 which was supported by acclaim. This will be taken to next week's Board meeting.
3. Trevor McGuirk provided thanks on behalf of the club, to Jerry Casburn, for the effort in handling the Bulletin and other items including BBQs over the Christmas period.
Induction of Sorel Coward
The club had the pleasure of inducting its latest member, Sorel Coward, who was accompanied by wife
Jane. President Heather inducted Sorel and she was introduced to the club by Jerry Casburn.
Sorel was born in Kadina, South Australia, brought up in Adelaide, and educated at Pulteney Grammar School. Sorel left home at the age of sixteen and joined the Royal Australian Navy, then worked as a Communications Officer in the New South Wales Police Force .
Sorel began undergraduate studies at St. Paul’s National Seminary, completing a double major in Systematic Theology and Philosophy. She was ordained as an Anglican Priest.
Sorel joined Rotary and became a member of the Rotary Club of Bright.
Returning to Adelaide, she took up a position as Parish Priest of Morphett Vale and then as the Parish Priest of McLaren Vale.
Sorel re-joined Rotary and joined Noarlunga East.
Sorel undertook a second degree, this time in psychology.
Sorel worked as a Community Mental Health Practitioner, with Mind Australia, specialising in supporting young people with severe forms of schizophrenia and paranoia.
Sorel is currently in private practice as a mental health social worker and counsellor.
Sorel now looks forward to re-joining Rotary for the third time, this time with Rotary Club of Unley.

Jason was introduced by Jerry Casburn. Jason spoke on his experiences with trips over more than ten
years to both Nepal and more recently Mongolia.
These started early in his career, through plans completed by Jason, his wife Annie, also an optometrist, and a specialist from Castle Hill Rotary Club in NSW.
The trips are managed as a Rotary Australia World Community Service project. The project takes eye care specialists and a number of supporters who hold eye clinics for the underprivileged in both countries. Many of those treated figure as officially blind under the World Health Organisation Specification. Which, as can be seen from the photographs below, are a lot less stringent than the Australian standard.

Jason described the clinics and showed the queues of people waiting for their turn. One for the men and one for the women. Treatment alternated between the two lest the women, who have to defer to the men, miss out. The photograph shows one such clinic.
Jason also explained that many problems could be resolved by the provision of spectacles or simple surgery. In some cases surgery was not possible.
Jason and his team are about to return in a 2018 trip.

Who keeps saying those things?
A man walked in to a bar after a long day at work. As he began to drink his beer, he heard a voice say seductively "You've got great hair!" The man looked around but couldn't see where the voice was coming from, so he went back to his beer.
A minute later, he heard the same soft voice say "You're a handsome man!" The man looked around, but still couldn't see where the voice was coming from.
When he went back to his beer, the voice said again "What a stud you are!" The man was so baffled by this that he asked the bartender what was going on.
The bartender said "Oh, it's the nuts--they're complimentary."
