President Trevor's Announcements
- Mavis is having her knee fixed and Rhonda is scheduled for another hospital visit.
- Next Friday he will be at the Baptist Care Shed (which we helped renovate) with Wendy
- Last Friday he attended a RC Seaford sausage sizzle ……just addicted to snags
- The search is on for young professionals to be part of the Group Study Exchange to Kansas City Missouri next year
- For those that have long memories and good diaries, the next District conference will be held April 5-7 next year in Broken Hill. A guest appearance by Mad Max is guaranteed.
Induction of Rajat Nagpal
Rajat, Trevor, Aarti and Jerry (getting some early Zumba practice)
Jerry Casburn introduced Rajat who has over 20 years experience in eCommerce and mCommerce space with senior leadership roles at MakeMyTrip, Expedia and Mystify and loves technology and automation. Currently he advises companies across the globe on strategies and sits on boards in Europe (Air Milo), Sri Lanka (Senit Technologies) and Singapore (Local Tribe). He was born in India, lived in Singapore and moved to Adelaide this year. He has a passion for volunteering and runs NFP Thread Shelter which has supplied 10,000kgs of clothes and household goods to needy people in India, Sri Lanka, Malaysia and Indonesia. Jerry also provided details of his wife Aarti (Telstra employee and Zumba instructor...wow) and children Jeevika and Kavish.
Rajat was inducted by President Trevor, assigned to the International Committee, has Jerry as his mentor and has been given the classification of Sales and Strategy. As well as the normal paraphernalia presented to Rajat, Aarti received her guest name badge.
Rajat and Aarti were enthusiastically welcomed into the club.
Guest Speaker: Sharon Wilson - BAE Systems
Valerie Bonython introduced Sharon who has been with BAE for 28 years. During that time she has fulfilled a number of roles including in procurement, systems supply strategies, the Frigate Team tender and defence capability. Since 2016 she has headed Industrial Strategy. In June 2018, British company BAE won the $35billion tender to supply the Australian navy with a fleet of new frigates...the Type 26 global combat ship.
BAE had its beginnings in 1560 in Essex as a gunpowder manufacturer (and still does produce). It currently employs 85,000 people mainly in the US and UK. BAE is into designing, manufacturing, and developing hardware and systems for land, sea and air warfare.
BAE came to SA in 1953 as a British aircraft company for the Woomera tests. Today there are 3500 employed with the company across Australia, 1000 of these in SA. BAE has been running ship maintenance facilities in WA, Vic and NSW and aircraft support in Vic and NSW. In Melbourne there is a missile design facility. The Nulka hovering anti-missile decoy was developed in Australia and is our best hardware defence export. In SA BAE has concentrated on aspects of electronic warfare and provided support for the Collins Class submarines.
To meet its contractual obligations, BAE will transfer their technology from the Glasgow Shipyards to Adelaide. There are a number of pluses. BAE has been here for 65 years and understands what we do...most of the work will be locally based. The 2016 White Paper on Defence was a defining document in that it spelt out the need for Australia to develop its home grown defence capability through establishment of small local companies, and with the expected technology ripple effect. The Techport here will be of world class standard with the latest techniques and increasing reliance on automated systems. We are competing with manufacture in low cost countries.
The strength of BAE is its diversity in personnel (including disruptive thinkers.....the latest buzz words for those that can take the next big technology leap), and its history. A digital video was shown of what the new Techport is intended to comprise and achieve.
Sharon was thanked by acclamation.
It was a tad disappointing that there were no questions about small boys with big toys.
Spots.....another outbreak of measles
Jerry Casburn thanked the Peachams for assisting at the Donations in Kind clean up last Saturday where excellent progress was made, and alluded to a bottling of fine wines later in the year to assist improvement in our admin funds.
Ken Haines informed of gross takings of $1258 from the Bunnings BBQ yesterday.
Leonie Kewen was delighted with the coverage we received in the What's on at the Show magazine for SA Police Officer of the Year and asked members to register and pay for show attendance for that ceremony by this Friday.
Valerie Bonython:
- has 100 raffle books to be sold by members for the Pink Ribbon event on 26 October
- mentioned that we will have several opportunities for a desk at Bunnings in the next few months and we will need volunteers
- exhorted members to sign up for the amazing Car Trial on 28 October
Robyn Carnachan reported that the stocks in the Unley Salvos larder are very depleted. Can members bring non perishable goodies next week to help: noodles, tim tams, long life milk, pasta, sauces, sugar, tea, coffee, biscuits, pancake mix, small cereal packs etc.
PP Heather Kilsby presented Trevor with the trappings of office which he was meant to have received at Changeover ….. perhaps Heather had just become too attached to all those badges.
Stephen Bone reminded that at our meeting next week we will be sampling the best of Paracombe Wines.....guests welcome.
The Finale
Cool hand John Peacham won the one hand poker with a two of clubs and Heather followed up with the 10 of spades. Those of us who fancy a good game of cards are disgusted. High on the social calendar is Trevor's birthday next Friday.....one wonders whether he will deliver the invitations to the fabulous celebrations in time. The editor was too exhausted to deliver happiness to one and all.
And the meeting finished on time.....almost!

RC Mitcham is fundraising with a screening of the BOOK CLUB at 3.30pm 26 August at Wallis Cinema Mitcham.
RC Hyde Park has a fundraiser at Unley Primary School on 27 October with singers Antonio and Kate Villano the Vogue Duo as their star attraction.
The Unley - Eastwood Fabulous Car Trial will be held on Sunday 28 October....perhaps an encounter with the Vogue Duo (see above) the night before would stimulate a better Unley performance.

The Community Health Care Training of Qhalis is extensive and long lasting providing sustainability to health care in isolated communities, clearly meeting the objective of Global grant 1641312.
Qhali, Genera, assists in an emergency delivery!
At 3 am early one morning, a man from Genara’s community of Airepampa went to her house seeking help for his pregnant wife who had gone into labor. In desperation, he asked her to call a taxi to the nearest health post, about a 1.5-hour drive. Immediately, Genara’s husband drove his motorcycle to a hill where he would get cellphone reception to request the transportation. Genara realizing the seriousness of the situation, decided it was best to accompany the couple.
Although Genera only resumed her qhali position with DESEA in April, she had previously worked for DESEA in 2012 – 2013 and received training in the management of labour and delivery and emergency deliveries. This past training served her well, as along the way, the woman’s contractions became stronger, and Genara realizing the birth was imminent, had no choice but to assist the woman with the birth of her baby - inside the car! Through her qhali training, Genara knew exactly what to do to ensure the mother and baby survived this stressful and dangerous delivery.
The family - as well as the MINSA health staff - were grateful and extremely impressed that Genara was able to provide this level of assistance in this emergency situation. Genara is a prime example of the impact of investing in local women with sustainable education.

Good Guessing

A man is alone in an airport lounge. A beautiful woman walks in and sits down at the table next to him.
He decides that because she's wearing a uniform, she's probably an off-duty flight attendant. So he decides to have a go at picking her up by identifying the airline she flies for, thereby impressing her greatly.
He leans across to her and says the British Airways motto : 'To Fly. To Serve'?
The woman looks at him blankly
He sits back and thinks up another line. He leans forward again and delivers the Air France motto: 'Winning the hearts of the world'?
Again she just stares at him with a slightly puzzled look on her face.
Undeterred, he tries again, this time saying the Malaysian Airlines motto: 'Going beyond expectations'? The woman looks at him sternly and says 'What the hell do you want?'
'Aha!' he says, "Qantas".
Getting the Message
A distraught senior citizen phoned her doctor's office. "Is it true," she wanted to know,
"that the medication you prescribed has to be taken for the rest of my life?"
"'Yes, I'm afraid so,"' the doctor told her.
There was a moment of silence before the senior lady replied, "I'm wondering, then, just how serious is my condition because this prescription is marked 'NO REFILLS'.."
