President Sorel's Announcements
RC Brownhill Creek is having its 40th anniversary in October and she will be attending.
Sorel has been asked by RI in Sydney to contribute to Rotary policies on diversity and inclusion.
David Middleton walked in at 6.35pm....obviously surprised that the meeting had started.
Sorel is joining the State Executive of the Australian Association of Social Workers which meet on the 4th Tuesday of each month.....alternative presiding arrangements will be in place for those meetings.
Committee Reports
Community Service Judy Barton reported that:
- Open Light at Victor Harbor which 5 of our club members had visited will be doing a residential house paint in October to help those with disabilities.
- Treasure Boxes needs clothes for older children.
- Wheelchair Sports is currently on hold.
- Carols at the Rotunda is being managed by Stephen
- Stamp collecting for Road Home will be the subject of an address next week.
- Providing time out for young carers at a camp, a previous club project, is being reexamined.
- Reno would like Rotary to join in with the Salvos who have bought a coffee van which will be operating in Unley to connect with those in need. A meal with the Salvos in March would be a good idea.
Vocational Service Leone Kewen reported that:
- A citation from District 9510 to the SA Police in recognition of their outstanding performance during the bushfires and Covid 19 will be presented shortly. There is a need for publicity beyond that which will be organised by SAPOL and we need to engage our District Public Image Officer, namely Rajat Nagpal.
- Small Business and Pride of Workmanship Awards will be launched on 12 October with the ceremony at Mitre 10 on 1 December. There will be 5 categories in POW. It will also feature a sharing of prize money and a voucher from Carla Zampati.
Thrift Shop Pam Trimmer informed that:
- The Shop had made a profit of over $23k last financial year, comparable with the previous year, which was a good result given the 4 month Covid shut-down.
- New items for sale will be small furniture and some electricals once Trevor has finished the checking course.
- During the shutdown $3,500 had been spent on back-room improvements which were making it safer and some equipment (eg ladder) had been bought with a Bunnings voucher.
- The recent sidewalk sale netted $300.
- A new 5-year lease had been signed with increases initially tied to CPI and later to market value. There is an ability to terminate during the contract period.
International Service John Peacham reported his committee had been somewhat hamstrung because of Covid but Fay and Trevor had worked up and submitted an application for a RF Global Grant for the Solomon Islands Clean Water and Sanitation Project. They had also examined the sourcing of the component parts, including tanks, toilet facility equipment, chicken coops, an outboard motor, solar panels (being donated) etc. Because of product scarcity in the Solomons, much will be bought here and shipped in a DIK container. There is interest in a providing hand washers developed by a RAWCS group in Qld.
New Generation Rhonda Hoare reported that her committee had set goals to enhance the development of young people. The plan for this year includes sponsorship of:
- a Mitcham Girls High student for National Youth Science Forum
- a student for Health of the River
- 2 participants in RYPEN
- a participant in RYLA
Rhonda, together with Fay and Trevor, had visited Unley Primary School to engage them in the Solomons project through raising money for equipment and forming a friendship with Deloso school children......there was much enthusiasm.
A Unley Youth has Talent contest is being organised for March/April next year and a performing arts enrichment committee being formed.
Rhonda is circulating a petition being pursued by obstetricians at the Women's and Children's Hospital re engagement in planning for the new hospital.
Treasurer Jerry Casburn reported that:
- our banking had changed from Commonwealth to Bendigo Bank
- bank balances at August end were $77,110.37 for regular activities and $10,922.57 for projects.
- the Bunnings BBQ last month raised $1431.80 while the Mitre10 BBQ last Saturday yielded $404, and $90 of raffle tickets were sold. We will now be doing Mitre10 twice a month.
Spots
Trevor McGuirk has 1800 fiction books stuck in 85 boxes in his garage from the Keswick Barracks and a monster sale is planned for Sunday 27 September. Pam is putting it on Facebook and dodgers will be produced next week. See advert below.
Nathan White was in desperate need of a third person to join with himself and John Kikkert for the debate with RC Hyde Park on 29 September and Sorel volunteered.
Patsy Beckett continued with her signing up of members for the car trial on October 25 and announced that the Christmas nosh-up would be held Tuesday 15 December, again at La Tombola.
Jerry Casburn needs more wine orders to top up our admin coffers. Jason Booth was distributing a request for donations to help people affected by the Covid crisis in Nepal. It is not a Rotary project but is worthwhile. Further advice to come.

According to DMST the meeting closed at midnight but that was unfair as it was a little earlier than that.

Rotary members feed thousands in Cape Town
Hall full of food purchased by the Rotary Club of Newlands for distribution to 17 Early Childhood Development Centres in Langa, Cape Town, South Africa.
As members of the Rotary Club of Newlands in Cape Town, South Africa, we could not stand by watching the devastating effects of COVID-19 on food security in our country and our city.
Soon after the initial lockdown period was announced, we jumped into action to do what we could to alleviate the suffering. To ensure that we provide what is needed to those most in need, we have drawn on our longstanding relationships with community leaders who have worked with us on projects over many years.
One of our members started a fundraising campaign for our club to raise funds for food relief on BackaBuddy, a South African crowdfunding platform. With the donations to this campaign and the assistance of various partners, we raised about 1.4 million South African Rand (more than US$80,000).
This translated to meals for thousands of children, families, and the elderly.
So far these funds have assisted the following beneficiaries in the greater Cape Town area:
- The families of 780 children from Early Childhood Development centres in Langa, including food parcels and food vouchers for a total of 12 weeks, amounting to around 200, 000 meals.
- More than 250 children, other local community members, and the elderly via two Early Childhood Development centres in Masiphumelele (near Noordhoek) and Mbekweni (near Paarl). Bot centres have well-managed community food kitchens which have provided meals for 12 weeks. This has helped many families survive.
- More than 3,000 children per day and many elderly people received meals from twelve Philisa Abafazi Bethu(PAB) community kitchens and feeding distribution points. These are superbly managed by the indefatigable Lucinda Evans who is the CEO of PAB and with whom Newlands Rotary has been working for many years.
While we are delighted with the support we have received and the relief this has enabled us to provide thus far, our efforts cannot stop here. The South African economy is at an all-time low and the unemployment rate at an all-time high.
The crisis continues in Cape Town and the rest of the country. We will continue to raise funds to feed the hungry. To this end our Rotary Club of Newlands BackaBuddy campaign remains open for further donations. Find more details how you can help.
