Planning a new hotel and extended jetty at Glenelg
Chairman Robyn Carnachan advised that Linda had arrived from Scotland 20 years ago. Her initial employment was with telcos before coming to Adelaide in 2005. In 2012 she was appointed manager of Jetty Road Development at Glenelg.
There are 329 businesses along Jetty Rd and it is pleasing to report that the vacancy rate is currently 3%. Council provides $500k per year for its management and upkeep. High on Linda's agenda is keeping shop vacancies low and increasing visitations. When she was appointed, the main item on the agenda was Parking! There is now something far better to talk about......the new business plan for jetty and Glenelg enhancement.
A concept plan has been developed which includes extending the jetty to accommodate a boutique hotel of 50 rooms, marine research and aquarium, events space and ferry docking facilities. Total estimated cost is $280m. The response to the proposal has been warm and welcoming, albeit without any commitment for funding. Realistically it would require a sizeable cash injection form State or Federal Government.
As Linda explained, nothing much has changed over the last century, illustrated by a series of photos of the jetty and foreshore covering that period. The Jetty will double in length. All materials and construction are designed to withstand the fiercest of storms. If finance is forthcoming it will take 5 years of further research followed by 2 years of implementation.
In relation to the criticism of inadequate parking facilities, Linda pointed out that there are 3700 parking spaces in the precinct..............free parking is available within easy walking distance.............and the area is well served by buses and trams. New Year celebrations draw big crowds of 40,000+.
Linda sees this development as a major tourist draw card [intrastate, interstate and overseas] and a gateway to other parts of the State. She was thanked by acclamation.

Trevor McGuirk attended the Zone 8 conference in Darwin with 399 others. Keynote speaker John Hewco, General Secretary of RI, warned that Rotary is at the cross roads and in crisis. Numbers in developed countries are plummeting, offset to a degree by developing countries. We need to be evolutionary and revolutionary. Both WA and SA will revert to 1 District each and management will be more through Regional Directors. 1062 grants worth $152m were issued by the Foundation last year. The extensive business of Rotary is conducted by 535 employees from a large building in Chicago. Only 9 cases of wild polio virus were detected last year.....we need 2 years of nil reports to be able to declare a polio free world.
Trevor is keen for us to fund and distribute Rotary fold-up shopping bags......great promotion.
Valerie Bonython again plugged the colossal Country Car Cruise on October 29.
Leonie Kewen thanked those who had helped with the distribution of Unley Road Pride of Workmanship and Small Business Awards materials. There have been 20 nominations so far.

Short Term Youth Exchange
Our District and those in New Zealand collaborate on providing opportunities for student exchanges. Applications close in July each year for the following year. The students are matched with their respective host families and in April the chosen SA students head off to NZ for 3 months and return home with their matched students for a 3 month stay here. Our program coordinator is from Mt Barker. The clubs involved are required to fund the cost of school uniforms and monitor the student's progress and wellbeing. Unley hosted a student 4 years ago.

Robyn Carnachan won the appalling squares. David M enjoyed his grand-daughter's 21st birthday celebration. Stephen the elder was pleased that the club would be sponsoring Shkiba Nasery and Thomas Scheuba at RYLA. Heather is off to the Sunshine Coast for 8 days. Wendy has been provided with copies of ultra interesting emails about a fellow in the US with the same name as her son. The very best news of the night was that Reno is staying! This overshadowed the poor takings from the Thrift Shop and something that Trevor was happy about (but not noted by the editor).

Rotary helps Hurricane Harvey victims
The Rotary Foundation and clubs along the Gulf Coast of Texas and Louisiana, USA, are collecting emergency relief funds to help flood victims of Hurricane Harvey, which slammed into southeast Texas.
Severe rainfall has caused historic flooding along the Texas coast, including in Houston, the fourth largest city by population in the United States. Deluged towns in the region are in desperate need of aid as thousands of residents were forced to flee their homes. About 6.8 million people have been affected by the hurricane, which made landfall on 25 August.
With an estimated damage of $190 billion, Hurricane Harvey could be the costliest natural disaster in U.S. history.
“The power of Rotary is in the foundation's ability to pull help from around the world while local clubs provide immediate relief in their own communities,” says Don Mebus of the Rotary Club of Arlington, Texas.
Rotary districts located along the Gulf Coast of Texas and Louisiana are collecting emergency relief funds and providing immediate aid to flood victims.
“We know that a disaster of this magnitude will require our financial assistance for months into the future,” says District 5930 Governor Betty Ramirez-Lara. “Our disaster relief committee will provide support where we believe it can best be used.”
Shelter Box, an independent charity and Rotary’s project partner, is also providing support to families displaced by the storm. Hundreds of light privacy tents will be deployed to evacuation centers throughout Texas for families to use temporarily.
“Our normal tents and Shelter Kits are not appropriate for the conditions families are experiencing in Texas,” says James Luxton, Shelter Box operations team leader. “The flooding is covering large swathes of land, and is set to rise even further in the coming days, making indoor shelter the best option.”
