Opening

I sat next to Stephen Baker, my bulletin mentor and hero. It was good to have him back on so many levels. I was able to delve into his encyclopaedic recollection of previous award nights and he declared that this one looked successful and (his estimate) that there looked like more than 100 people. That was good enough for me so I didn't count.

Bill (no surname given and none sort by me), the chair of the Unley Road Association got things off by welcoming dignitaries and Rotarians and introducing other folk from the Association also surnameless. He called on President John to open our meeting. Bill then disappointed the crowd by saying the guest speaker couldn't make it. He told us it had been a difficult year for Unley Roadsters but that things are looking up, and welcomed us all in this celebration of business. Others got to speak.

Our own Brendan Kenny told the assembly about what Rotary does. I have to say that I have heard Brendan speak on many occasions and by gee he does it well. He claims not to be a confident speaker but he's cogent and interesting, and by the end, the Rotarians in the crowd were all feeling weary just from hearing all the things we do.

Local member David Pisoni took to the podium and spoke about how great Unley is. He got to present a lot of the awards so he's usually the one not winning the award in the photos below.

Mayor Michael Hewitson got to say a few words about the wonders of Unley that includes a number of shopping strips. Goodwood Road and King William Road have already been tarted up and now Unley Road is getting a gig with tree planting and seating on the agenda. He confirmed that business success and Unley's success go hand in hand and the Council is there to help.

Bill announced the Unley Road Associations charity partner of the year is the Jodi Lee Foundation. and Nick Lee gave a brief address. Nick recently spoke to our club and members who were there, and if not are avid followers of the bulletin will be aware of their work.

After all this, the crowd was no longer disappointed about the missing guest speaker and the awards were presented.

Fitness project promotes health for Oglala Lakota schools

By Martin Cohn, Rotary Club of Springfield, Vermont, USA

For more than a decade, members of Rotary District 7870 (New Hampshire, Vermont, USA) have been helping residents of Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. The district’s service projects have ranged from making upgrades to the local nonprofit radio station, to providing laptops for students, to delivering materials for traditional quilts. District Rotarians have also partnered with South Dakota Rotary clubs to fund a makerspace for native artists.

This past fall, we were contacted by Doni DeCory, director of health and wellness for the Oglala Lakota County School district. She was looking for a way to help students and teachers get healthy together. She wanted to make wellness a priority. Her idea was to give each student and teacher their own Fitbit.

Fitbits are fitness trackers you can wear on your wrist. The devices have sensors underneath that monitor your blood pressure, your pulse, your heart rate, and the number of steps you take. The core functionality in all the trackers is a pedometer: a three-point accelerometer that tracks your movements, gathers data, and translates the information into digital signals to measure your physical activity.

To jumpstart her “Let’s get healthy together” program, DeCory needed 1,200 trackers for staff members and students. Three past district governors – John Siemienowicz, Venu Rao, and Tony Gilmore – heard about the need and donated the funds.

DeCory encouraged each school to develop their own wellness plan that took into consideration the emotional, social, mental, and physical well-being of their staff and students. Some set up fitness centers in their schools. Others created wellness rooms, while others incorporated their Lakota culture into their wellness response.

Oglala Lakota County has four elementary or middle schools, a high school, and a virtual high school with 435 staff and close to 1,800 students. With the 1,200 trackers, every staff member and as many students as possible are able to use them in physical education classes or other class activities. One of the schools held a competition for most steps.

At another of the schools, staff participated in a fitness challenge and took a virtual walk to Rapid City and back. One competitor lost 48 pounds. DeCory said the trackers have encouraged a lot of students who don’t get involved in organized sports to find ways to become more active and improve their fitness.

One of the goals of the project is to get students interested in healthy habits like walking. The devices have helped build self-esteem and given all students – even those who are reticent to participate in new activities in gym class – another way to stay fit.

Some of the staff who were diabetic were able to improve their nutrition, lower their blood sugar, and come off their medication. The district was able to avoid an increase in staff health insurance rates for the first time due to fewer claims and increased attention to fitness.

It’s our hope that this project will encourage the students to engage in more physical activities and aim to achieve a target of 10,000 steps a day, a goal recommended by the National Institutes of Health.

The Tale End.....

It's all about the WORK.
An eight year old girl went to the office with her Dad on a "Take your kid to work day".
As they were walking around the office the young girl was getting crankier and crankier, crying and sobbing. Her father asked what was wrong with her?

As the concerned office staff gathered around she sobbed loudly "Daddy, where are all the clowns you said you worked with?"

What do you call a lizard who doesn’t work?
A reptile dysfunction

When my wife starts to sing, I always go outside and do some garden work....
so our neighbors can see there's no domestic violence going on.

A group of passengers are riding the bus to work…
Suddenly, the engine splutters and the bus grinds to a halt at the side of the road. The driver gets out, opens the engine compartment, and peers inside, cursing and swearing.

After a while the passengers get restless. A woman pulls a small toolkit out of her purse, gets up and goes outside, and sees the driver frantically trying to reattach a loose electrical cable with his fingers.

“Would you like a screwdriver,” she asks.

“I’d love one,” he replies, “but we’re ten minutes late already”!

When I was young, I was poor.
After many years of hard work, I am no longer young.

A golfer loses three fingers in a horrific work accident
He asks the doctor if he’ll be able to drive with that hand..
The doctors says… Maybe, but I wouldn’t count on it..
