Scene setting......Paracombe is a delightful tiny town with 300+ residents 20kms from the Adelaide CBD.
Bob Mills introduced Paul and Ryan:
- Paul Drogemuller is the owner and chief wine maker of Paracombe Wines. He is a passionate wine maker who hails from this territory where small farms traditionally produced apples and pears. He and wife Kathy purchased a 5 acre dairy farm after the Ash Wednesday fire of 1983 and established a vineyard and winery with no wine making experience. In its earlier days the winery produced 5000 dozen bottles; today it is 20,000. Paracombe Wines have won numerous awards and are exported around the world.
- Ryan Giles hails from Tasmania and came to South Australia where he obtained hospitality and management qualifications and became a TAFE lecturer specialising in cordon bleu. In 2011 Paul lured Ryan to Paracombe as its Brand Ambassador and Operations Manager.
Paul explained why Paracombe is perfect for producing good wine...it has an average annual rainfall of 900mls, a cool climate, and the property of now 50 acres sits on an ancient plateau with very old soil type (1 billion+ years). With effective drainage (which allows deep rooting) and high rainfall, minimal irrigation is required. Only organic sprays are applied. Kathy looks after sales.
Paul and Ryan explained and served the 3 white and 4 red wines presented for tasting:
- 2016 Pinot Chardonnay Cuvee (sparkling white) under crown seal
- 2017 Sauvignon Blanc
- 2017 Pinot Gris
- 2013 The Reuben, a Bordeaux Blend with 50% Cabernet Sauvignon.
- 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon fermented in French Oak for 18 months
- Tempranillo.....a Spanish red
- 2013 Shiraz also fermented in French Oak......superior to American Oak for these varieties
Damien served up a host of tasty tummy ticklers which prevented starvation and freshened the taste buds.
Editor's comment: For those with a penchant for the odd grape tipple we had a marvellous (to use David Middleton's words) night out with a talented wine maker, delightful drops of elixir and food to match.......it is regrettable that our program manager did not arrange for a Roman harp to provide background music.
My special choices....the pinot gris and shiraz hit all the right spots.
Stephen Bone gave the vote of thanks and Paul and Ryan were warmly applauded.

Jerry Casburn urged members to consider potential participants for the Group Study Exchange to the US next year (see advert below) and commented that the Metropolitan Male Choir had performed brilliantly last weekend.
Dennis Liddle reported that preparations had begun for the Carols at the Rotunda on Sunday December 16.
Valerie Bonython again reminded of the Pink Ribbon event on 26 October (raffle books being distributed) and the amazing Car Trial on 28 October.
Briony Casburn announced that RC McLaren Vale was featuring its traffic accident simulation on 26 September.....this has been a feature of club activities for the past 18 years.
Paul Drogemuller promised that 10% of the revenue from orders by club members would be returned for club projects.
The Finale
Dennis Liddle won the card pull with a 6 of diamonds and Jason Booth followed up with the Jack of Spades...….both highly skilled poker players winning with dud cards.
Bob Mills completed a great meeting with a better than average story about Americans fracturing their railway engines with frozen chooks....and the meeting finished a little late.....but who cared?

To The Gambia and back: Our Dutch adventure
The Dutch Rotarians took 11 cars to The Gambia, which were auctioned off to support women’s education.

Our adventure started on 21 October 2017. Rally teams of six Dutch Rotary clubs, accompanied by five independent supporting teams, departed from Zwijndrecht in the Netherlands for a challenging 7,500 km (4,600 mile) journey to The Gambia, where we arrived on 11 November. The trip passed through Belgium, France, Spain, Morocco, Mauritania, and Senegal, through dessert areas and sometimes accompanied by local guides for security reasons.
The 11 cars that took us to The Gambia were sponsored and auctioned at final destination. The result: $50,000 to be donated to a Dutch Rotary initiative called “School Plan Gambia,” which enables young women to attend school up to and including university.
On departure, our cars were all fully loaded with relief supplies to be distributed to various hospitals and institutions visited during the trip. We transported an incubator for a hospital in Mauritania and various ultrasound machines and medical supplies for health centers in Senegal and The Gambia. All of those were donated by Dutch hospitals.
During the trip, we were warmly welcomed by local Rotary clubs such as Nouakchott in Mauritania and St. Louis in Senegal. The two Rotary clubs in The Gambia, Brusibi and Fajara, welcomed the teams with a dinner and a lunch. In Senegal the team members were invited for dinner by the Dutch Ambassador.
This challenging trip was not only an unforgettable experience for all participating team members but also, most importantly, an excellent opportunity to promote Rotary’s presence and good work in this part of the world.
The six Dutch Rotary clubs which joined us on this trip were: Texel, Harderwijk, Amsterdam-Nieuwendam, Dordrecht Johan de Witt Ter Merwe, Zwijndrecht-Waal en Devel and Zwijndrecht.
We’re already working on the next trip for 2019.
