Sorel welcomed a 'bag load' of guests including Mayor Michael Hewitson, whom she is seeking to have the club to work with on the greening of Unley.

Next week's celebrations will include the District Governor and PDG and their spouses....to date there are 38 registrations and awaiting responses from 18 members....need to finalise by Thursday.
The prize for the bingo is $10 plus a packet of fruchocs.
Guest Speaker:Tim Thomson - Sculpture in Bronze
Chair Nathan White introduced Tim who has been a sculptor for his entire adult life. He lives and operates a foundry at Crafers.
Tim spoke on being a sculptor as a way of life. He has been living at Crafers on a ten acre block with large work shed since 1984. His current commission work through artist Robert Hannaford is a bronze statue of the Queen for Government House. He reflects that his own bronze and steel statues are a passing parade, self referenced by the inspiration of what he sees around him.
His philosophy....Whatever may pass let me be singing at the end of the day.
One of his other recent commissions was a statute to mark the 100th anniversary of the Memorial Hospital (1920 -2020). The project has lasted 3 years from discussions with the organisers, to setting a sculpture theme (a 1920 nurse) in a way that exemplifies the care provided by nurses at the hospital, to developing a small plasticine model for approval, to choosing a suitable model to guide the sculpting, to developing a metal skeleton covered in sculptured clay, to the final bronze statue.
Much of Tim's work is for himself and his property is adorned with steel and bronze sculptures.....including fish hooks, oak vessel, chooks, acacia seed pod, lichen, dawn chorus of 3 magpies, tiddalick, darwin 2 step, camels, rise and fall........would be fantastic if a vocational visit could be organised! Commissioned sculptures shown included Hungry Wombats for Minda Home, the hands for Montesorri, Russell Ebert and Harry Butler...see here Absolutely brilliant!
Tim was thanked by acclamation and suitably rewarded with inspirational wine...hopefully.....if we are to have that visit

President Sorel on doing good through water, sanitation and hygiene.
According to the statistics there are across the globe 844m people without ready access to water, 2.1b without potable water, 2.3b without any sanitation and 4.5b with inadequate sanitation. The Rotary Foundation funds a WASH program - Water, Sanitation and Health - and there are currently 1000 wash programs in 100 countries. The aim is to provide universal clean drinking water, adequate sanitation and proper hygiene training to all by 2030. Our Rotary club can be proud of the two projects it is pursuing, namely Solomon Islands Water and Sanitation and the Hygiene Biogas in Nepal
A video was shown of water filters provided by Rotary to help the poor of Lima who rely on highly polluted water from the river for their water supply.
Nathan White recorded the anniversaries of Bob Mullins (inducted into the club 39 years ago) and John Peacham (away and enjoying his 70th birthday celebrations on the 14th).
Patsy Beckett asked members to vote on a debating topic for our next clash with Hyde Park on 29 September, and the winner was.....Robots will increase the quality of life.
The Redex Car trial is on 25 October....effort is need to beat the reigning and 2 times consecutive world champions Stephen and Beverley Baker....a registration sheet is being circulated.
Heather Kilsby emphasised that her coffee chat will be swinging along at the Unley Shopping Centre this coming Friday at 10.30am.....all welcome.
Wendy Andrews needs help with peeling 25 kgs of onions for the next Bunnings BBQ...suggested after the coffee chat on 28 August.
Finale
Happiness took strange shapes with Stephen being content with small football mercies (Crows in front at half time) and Bob Mullins full of port, plus David telling a sheet story about the fire fuel for a Mongolian yurt/ger.
Jason and Judy were the big bingo winners....time to recalibrate.

Rotaract art event proves virtual fundraising can be fun

Participants in the art and wine event show off their creations.
Early in the COVID-19 pandemic, our Rotaract club realized the need to stay connected more than ever. We switched to an online platform and started brainstorming ways that we could fight the feelings of isolation that were building up because of social distancing. That’s when we decided to hold a virtual art and wine event as a fundraiser.
“The Wine, Art & Rotaract event” was our take on the common painting party where guests follow step by step instructions from a professional artist in creating a painting. Only ours had a virtual twist.
Instead of providing guests with the necessary art supplies in person, we encouraged our online guests to be creative about their choice of materials – from paper to T-shirts, to canvas. The same rule applied to mediums, with participants deciding to use paint, crayons, or even makeup. The limit was one’s own imagination.
Our club provided the music and an online art instructor, who led participants through the process of creating a painting. Participants supplied their own beverage at home. We were determined to engage members of other Rotaract clubs, Rotary members, and guests for a night of fun.
I must say we were not sure how the event would turn out considering the fact we had never done a virtual event before. But embracing the challenge, we were pleasantly surprised with the results. We had guests sign up and pay a registration fee from all over our district and beyond. We mingled with other Rotaractors, Rotarians, and guests, and shared some laughs at our different levels of artistic talent.
The event opened our eyes to the ability to serve our community and still have fun, all within the restraints of social distancing. The money we raised will support our upcoming community service projects including distributing food to frontline healthcare workers, and making and distributing personal protective equipment.
We look forward to many more creative and innovative events as we embrace our new world.
