President Jason's Announcements

Welcome Back Heather Kilsby and Jerry Casburn

Jason explained that the purpose of this evening's meeting was to allow the committees to consider their plans for the current year.  The style had been changed to allow conversation and discussion throughout the evening by replacing the usual meal with finger food.  This allows participants to engage for the full evening without the interruption of meal service.

Several such sessions are planned for the coming year to allow committees to monitor progress against  plans and add or modify targets

Fundraising Proposal

Jo McLaren representing Phil Hoffman Travel was introduced to the club by Patsy Beckett.  Jo was to have attended the last meeting but was unable to make it.

Jo described a strategic partnership with the Rotary Clubs of Adelaide and Maitland, whereby, clubs can nominate travellers, either members, family, or, acquaintances, to make travel arrangements via Phil Hoffman travel.  The organisation thereby avoids marketing costs, which are passed on to clubs as a fund raiser.  Over the past year the Adelaide club has received $6,000 in funds and Maitland club, some $5,500.

A full copy of the proposal was provided, and will be published next week.

Committee Meetings:

Four tables were set up to accommodate the following committees, Community, Vocational and Youth, International, Membership and the P(Presidential) train strategies.

At the end of the evening, brief reports, on their discussions, were provided by the individuals named below,1` for the following committees:-

Community (Chair: Robyn Carnachan, Reporter: David Middleton)

The committee will repeat activities on Treasure Boxes, Mobile Showers and TocH as conducted in the 2018-19 year.

Several new projects are being considered:

Men's Health - Suggestions, as to how this might be progressed, are sought from club members.

Children's Hospice - Patsy Beckett and Valerie Bonython are keen to progress provision of this facility in the Adelaide region, using models as in other state capitals.  Patsy will undertake provision of a "Needs Analysis" for consideration by the committee.

Sale of Used Postage StampsChristina Way will be undertaking the collection of stamps as a fund raiser.

Carp Elimination in the River MurrayPatsy Beckett and Valerie Bonython are planning a fishing fundraising event to catch and assist in elimination carp in the Murray river.

International (Chair: Dennis Liddle, Reporter: John Peacham)

The committee will be undertaking to meet at least every two months.

Solomon Islands - Fay Reid will keep the committee appraised of progress with the request for DFAT funding for Water and Sanitation projects, value $50,000.  A probable requirement for a container of goods from Donations in Kind will be pursued when needed.

Friendship Grants - Investigation to be undertaken for funding of Pacific projects.

Project Selection - A review of potential projects for club involvement will be undertaken.

Books for the Philippines - Project to evaluate the provision of text and exercise books for the indigenous population.

Nepal - Potential projects with Nepalese clubs to be explored.

Assisting Volunteers - Potential project.

Vocational and Youth (Chair: Leonie Kewen, Reporter Valerie Bonython)

The following traditionally supported projects will continue:

National Youth Science Forum - Suitable candidate to be sought.

Rotary Youth Leadership Awards - Suitable candidate to be sought.

Rotary Youth Program of Enrichment - Suitable candidate to be sought.

One and All Development Voyage - Suitable candidate to be sought.

Health of the River - Suitable candidate to be sought.

Police Officer of the Year - Suggest this is taken on as a club project with specific assigned resources.

Pride of Workmanship and Small Business Award - Needs a higher profile from the event for our club and a better awards event.

Operation Flinders - Will support two students this year.

The committee will not be supporting the Conoco Phillips Science Experience and is unlikely to support a repeat of the Fish Tank, which seeks to promote youth business opportunities.

The committee will seek more student involvement and talks on club nights.

Membership (Chair: Heather Kilsby)

President Jason opened the report by advising the club that membership will be seen as a major focus which will engage all club members.

Shopping Centre - A recruiting campaign is likely to be repeated, but ideas are sought from members for hands-on style activities which might engage curious passers by, similar to past campaigns.  Helping Hands (Prosthetic Hand Assembly) will not be an option as there is a shortage of volunteers to go overseas to fit the assembled hands.

Information Evening - An information evening is being proposed with dynamic speakers talking on subjects such as investment for retirement, life after work/children.

Member Invitation - Suggestion that we engage each member in inviting a friend or acquaintance to attend a meeting to explore what Rotary is about.

SPOTS

  • Feedback on Pam Trimmer's recovery was reported upon by Bob Mullins and Jerry Casburn.  Pam is recovering following a second operation to resolve bowel leakage following the first operation and is likely to be in hospital for another week.  She still has her eye on the ball and is actively following progress with the Thrift Shop.  Bob advised that the ongoing preparation and filling of rosters and the management of the shop is being managed well by a number of the volunteers.

The Paris Flea Market event will be postponed and President Jason is undertaking to ensure                 external supporting cafes and others are advised.

  • Bob Mills reported that Honorary member and club stalwart Ken Daly was still in hospital at Flinders but will be moving into palliative care.
  • Sorel Coward advised that following meetings with President Jason and AG Di Clements, she would be available from 5.30pm until 6pm each Tuesday to discuss potential ideas and suggestions to improve the operations of the club.
  • Patsy Beckett reported on the Mitre 10 BBQ.  Provision of steak sandwiches as an experiment had proved very successful and an overall profit of $250 had been banked.

Cusco Peru Project Report (Past President Trevor McGuirk)

Dear All,

My journey to Cusco this time was less arduous for three reasons - no flight delays, plenty of leg room which I pre-booked and straight from Santiago, Chile, to Cusco, by passing, Lima - saving several hours. Cusco has never accepted international visitors directly but times "are a changing" and one was given a very cordial welcome unlike the grumpy reception in Lima of past visits. Cusco is a city whose economy relies on tourists. About 120,000 of them here every day, in a population of 500,000.
The weather has been brilliant, days of 20 degrees and bright sunshine.

I hit the ground running and have met with a small group of Rotarians to discuss the Global Grant, with the CEO of DESEA Peru, Judy Chavez, also discussed the project and spent the whole day at Quishaurani (or Quiswarani).  I know you are all interested in the school bus project so one of my first tasks was to go and see it. I met with Luis Collantes, from Condor Travel and arranged to meet him last Wednesday.

Legal documents are currently being drawn up for the transfer of the vehicle to the community of Quiswarani. Payment, as in a bank transfer, will  be made this week from Contours Travel in Melbourne and hopefully the President of Quiswarani, plus the driver, will be in Cusco next week to take possession of the bus.

My journey to Quiswarani yesterday (Saturday) started at 6am. First a mini bus ride to Calca in the Sacred Valley - one hour. Then with Sadith Molina and her sisters, Doris and Janet, we hired a small station wagon and headed deep into the Andes - a journey I have done before but never stop marvelling at the beautiful mountain  scenery. Calca to Quiswarani takes another 3 hours.

The community were expecting me and what a reception I received - a real community festival with dancing, music and endless speeches. Of course in Quechua I understood everything - like no - my interpreter Sadith worked hard to keep me up to speed. I did however understand "gracias Papa Trevor"
which was mentioned just a few (many) times. My reply speech was to tell them the bus, promised 2 years ago, would soon be theirs and that all of the activities have been made possible through funding from Rotary International, the Rotary Club of Unley, Kids of Cusco and my own personal contributions .

The crowd noise was greater than that of the Crows game Saturday afternoon.  After a feast of trout, potatoes and beer from a foam cup - a new experience! we finally tried to leave  left to return to Cusco, but this took at least 40 mins of "goodbyes and thankyou". We arrived at 8.30pm - just a little tired.

Today is a rest day, a day of catch up and emails but I met a couple from new Zealand and we have arranged to meet at 2.30 pm at Nortons Pub to watch the football (soccer) grand final of the "CupaAmerica" between Peru and Brazil.

This town will go crazy if Peru win as the did last Friday night when Peru defeated Chile to go into the final.

Until next time, visiting Aachuarta, Ttio Grande, Chaupi Mayo and Sascicancha in the mean time.

Trevor.

Finale

Christina Way, recently returned to the club, "snapped" everyone with the winning card.

Anniversaries included advice of Geoff Hill's 42 years of service to the Unley club. Bob Mills told a joke with religious connection relating men's poor understanding of engaging with the fairer sex and the need to carry paracetomol.

Jason closed the meeting at 8.20pm.

More Blond Jokes

A blonde guy is in the bathroom and his wife shouts: "Did you find the shampoo?" He answers, "Yes, but I'm not sure what to do . . . it's for dry hair, and I’ve just wet mine."

A blonde guy spies a letter lying on his doormat!  It says on the envelope "DO NOT BEND." He spends the next 2 hours trying to figure out how to pick it up.

A blonde guy shouts frantically into the phone, "My wife is pregnant, and her contractions are only two minutes apart!"  "Is this her first child?" asks the Doctor?   "No!" he shouts, "this is her husband!"

A blonde guy was driving home, drunk as a skunk.  Suddenly he has to swerve to avoid a tree, then another, then another.  A cop car pulls him over, so he tells the cop about all the trees in the road.  The cop says, "That's your air freshener swinging about!"

A blonde guy's dog goes missing and he is frantic.  His wife says "Why don't you put an ad in the paper?"  He does, but two weeks later the dog is still missing. "What did you put in the paper?" his wife asks.  "Here boy!" he replies.

A blonde guy is in jail.  The guard looks in his cell and sees him hanging by his feet!  "Just WHAT are you doing?" he asks.  "Hanging myself," the blonde replies.  "The rope should be around your neck" says the guard.  "I tried that," he replies, "but then I couldn't breathe."

This one actually makes sense.  An Italian tourist asks a blonde guy: "Why do scuba divers always fall backwards off their boats?"  To which the blonde guy replies: "If they fell forward, they'd still be in the boat."

A woman phoned her blonde neighbour and said: "Close your curtains the next time you and your wife are having sex.  The whole street was watching and laughing at you yesterday."  The blonde guy replied: "Well the joke's on all of you because I wasn't even at home yesterday."
