Maria Galatsanos

Jerry Casburn introduced Maria  who works for the Department of State Development as Senior Trade Adviser. She has 20+ years of experience in the area of trade and investment and has managed the State Government's  China and north Asia desk, and helped Australian companies export to the USA. Maria worked in the Economic Development Unit of Adelaide City Council and drafted their Student Growth Plan. Maria speaks Greek, Spanish and Italian, is currently studying Chinese, and has a passion for all things international. Her volunteering involvement includes among other things a stint as Marketing Director of Adelaide Kiwanis and organiser of the Pink Ribbon Morning Tea in Unley.

Jason Booth 

Jerry Casburn introduced Jason who was accompanied by his family of Annie, Evie and Charli. He was born in Taree and graduated with a Bachelor of Optometry from the University of NSW with first class honours in 1996. Much of his early career was with Laubman and Pank where he became a State manager in several Sates.  He has served on the State Council of the Optometry Association for 7 years, was State Vice President and chairs the education committee. He is now Principal Optometrist/Clinical Educator at Flinders University. Through RAWCS Jason has been on 23 international aid trips; he was a charter member of Rotary Makin EDGE club (President 2009-10) and awarded the Paul Harris Fellow in Nepal. He was awarded a Member of the Order of Australia in 2016.

Jason has been appointed to the International Service Committee, will be mentored a little by Jerry, and carries the vocational designation of Optometrist.

Jason was also warmly welcomed into the club.

Guest Speaker: Chrissy Sulistyo - Helping Families of Condemned Indonesians

Reno Elms introduced Chrissy by likening her to Mt Agung in her capacity to create chaos. Chrissy has three daughters, and was born in Bali into the Hindu faith. She returned to Bali two years ago to repair her property there and was struck by the plight of wives and children of prisoners condemned to death. And so was created the House of Ruth and Naomi.

 

Chrissy explained how traumatic it is for the families of condemned prisoners of the Kerokaban prison who are abused and shunned by the wider community. A safer environment was needed for them to rebuild and restore their lives. Support is provided through spiritual help, counselling, skills training, food and domestic aid. The initial reaction from the community to her House of Ruth and Naomi was hostility but that is now changing. The prison is to be expanded and, given the likelihood of the continuation of capital punishment in Indonesia, it is expected that the demands on her House, which she runs with the help of the Eleos Church, will grow. A video was shown.

 

Chrissy was thanked by acclamation.

 

President Heather announced a donation of $500 from our club.

Patsy Beckett asked members to collect stamps which she will dispatch to Melbourne to a lady who has already raised thousands to combat trachoma through this method.

 

Dennis Little waxed lyrical about the Carols on Sunday....sausages, crepes, icecream, lollies being packaged, streamers on sticks, band practice at 3pm.... He asked members to wear their Rotary shirts and get there by 2pm. Reno reported that the camel had broken down.

 

Reno Elms thanked the club for the toiletries donated and mentioned there were plenty of tasks which would benefit from our help including looking after the Christmas tree at Unley Shopping Centre and assistance on Christmas Day.

 

Damian Leach extolled the virtues of members attending the Rotary Leadership courses being held 10-11 February and 28-29 April 2018. He announced that applications for RYPEN, which is happening on 20-22 April, are now open and RYLA will follow.

David Middleton was happy that he won the appalling squares to help pay for the membership fee increase.

6 Reasons why we should give to Rotary International

1. We fight Polio 

For decades, Rotary has been a leader in the battle against polio and has kept the pressure on as worldwide cases plummeted from 350,000 in 1988 to only 15 cases so far this year. We’re closer than ever to ending this devastating disease. 

Your impact will be even greater, thanks to a 2-to-1 match from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. All donations (up to $50 million) to end polio will be tripled, providing critical funding to our work to create a polio-free world. 

2. We teach people to read

Our goal is to strengthen the capacity of communities to support basic education and literacy, reduce gender disparity in education, and increase adult literacy. We support education for all children and literacy for children and adults through mentoring, scholarships, teacher training, and access to learning opportunities. 

3. We build peace

Each year, armed conflict and persecution displace, injure, or kill millions of people. More than 90 percent of them are civilians, and half are children. 

Rotary projects provide training that fosters understanding and provides communities with the skills to resolve conflicts. Our members are taking action to address the underlying causes of conflict, including poverty, inequality, ethnic tension, lack of access to education, and unequal distribution of resources.

4. We provide clean water, sanitation

The statistics are alarming. Worldwide, one person in every 10 does not have access to safe water, and 2.3 billion people lack access to adequate sanitation. One consequence: 900 children under age five die each day from diarrheal diseases.

Having clean water and sanitation is a human right. Rotary members integrate water, sanitation, and hygiene into education projects. When children learn about disease transmission and practice good hygiene, they miss less school. When people, especially children, have access to clean water, sanitation, and hygiene, they lead healthier and more successful lives. Rotary is helping to make clean water available to everyone by 2030.

5. We grow local economies

Nearly 800 million people live on less than $1.90 a day. Rotary is working to strengthen local entrepreneurs and community leaders.

We know that one solution doesn’t fit every problem, so we work with people to help them help themselves. 

We help Tanzanians with albinism find safe, healthy livelihoods. In Ecuador, Rotary has made 250 microloans and trained more than 270 people in job skills and business management. In Arkansas, USA, we worked with Heifer International to extend the growing season for farmers and help them find new customers.

6. We save mothers and children

An estimated 5.9 million children under the age of five die each year because of malnutrition, inadequate health care, and poor sanitation. More than 800 women die every day from birth- and pregnancy-related complications.

Rotary is saving lives by supplying birthing kits, immunizations, neonatal care equipment, and medical training.

With access to quality care, mothers and children live longer and healthier lives, and Rotary is providing that care.
