Behind the badge with Robyn Carnachan
Paul Duke introduced Robyn by revealing that his grandson had recently married Robyn's great niece.....unsure what that means in degrees of separation.
Robyn is in the prime of her life at 84 with one or 2 replacement parts and the odd blood imbalance. One daugher, 3 nieces, one nephew....3 grandsons, great grandmother to 3 girls and great aunt to 8 girls. Born in Norwood in 1941 and has live in various suburbs of Adelaide plus Cobar (NSW) and Blackall (Qld).
Her mother decided dressmaking with Charles Birks was the future, but lasted only 4 years....thence onto accouting where she worked for Chrysler, State Government Departments, Local Government and 'temped ' with a range of private sector employers......retiring at 72 after working with a lot of great people. Loves travelling around Australia.....not tempted to wander off overseas. Memorable sites there are aplenty around our country like Karijini National Park, Sand Dunes of Lancelin, Cobbold Gorge, Paronella Park, Nundle, Callala Beach, Katamatite, Mulwala, Elmore, Woakwine Cutting, Gulf Savanah and Sydney, Canberra and Floriade in September. The Gulf of Carpentaria is her next trip in August.
Patsy recruited Robyn into Unley Rotary when she saw us demonstrating the assembly of prosthetic hands at the Unley Shopping Centre....great catch Patsy!
Robyn was applauded for her contribution even though the speed of her delivery was giving the editor doses of RSI.
Presidential announcements
The Prez is having a knee recosntruction on 7 July and will be out of action for about 6-7 weeks. During this period we will need replacement for:
Bunnings BBQ collection of foodstuffs and trailer utilisation.....Rhonda offered Roger's services using Paul's ute. For the longer term, there is a need for someone to manage the BBQs

Unley Council liaison:
As a guest of Unley Council, he and Rhonda attended an address by Australian of the Year Neil Daniher at the Convention Centre....but failed to volunteer to jump into the icebath at the footy which raises funds for MND...shame. During the event he linked up with locals running interesting ventures.......significant potential.
At a Community Organisation Meeting sponsored by the council, he met leaders of community groups with whom we could also work for mutual benefit.
Effort to be made with the Council's building manager to find a local home for our BBQ gear etc.

Ross Smith recounted the Council's Fish Tank event some 3 weeks ago at the Unley Town Hall for which he was a judge on behalf of our club. Plenty of good business ideas flowed from the young people.....see photos below. But there was no excuse for his inability to erect the club's Youth Banner after extensive training from the editor.
Ross Burton urged members to produce more bottles of wine for the Quiz wine wall.
Rhonda Hoare needs help to launch her proposed Musical Garden in a perfect south parklands setting...... a good mate of the Premier would do the trick.
Induction of Deborah Forbes
Virginia Cossid introduced Deb who hails from Sydney but with forebears dating back to the 1800s in Unley. She taught German and French in NSW High Schools and then joined ABC Sydney TV assisting in the formulation of news etc presentations and producing children's programs. Below we have Rhonda, Virginia, the Prez, Deb and Marie (slightly camera shy, but we are working on it).
Deb will join the Youth Committee, be mentored by Marie Rothe.....and was warmly welcomed into the club.

Rotary and Gates Foundation extend partnership to end polio
CALGARY (22 June 2025) – Rotary and the Gates Foundation are renewing their longstanding partnership to end polio, announcing a joint commitment of up to US$450 million to support the global polio eradication effort at the annual Rotary International Convention.
“While historic progress has been made toward defeating polio—90 percent of the world’s population is free from the wild poliovirus—we’re facing significant challenges from competing financial priorities to fragile health systems. Furthermore, the detection of polio in places like Papua New Guinea that were previously polio free demonstrates that polio anywhere is a threat everywhere,” said Rotary International PolioPlus Committee Chair Mike McGovern. “The extension of our fundraising partnership with the Gates Foundation allows us to reach children around the world with lifesaving vaccines, keeping every child and community safe from this preventable disease.”
Rotary will continue to raise $50 million per year, with every dollar to be matched with two additional dollars from the Gates Foundation. This renewed agreement will translate into up to a total of $450 million to support the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI).
"Rotary was the first to envision a world without polio—and today, we have the tools and knowledge to make that vision a reality,” said Bill Gates, Chair of the Gates Foundation. “If we all maintain our commitment and keep funding the solutions we know work, then soon, no family will have to live in fear of this horrific disease ever again."
The funds are used to support everything from vaccine delivery, surveillance, and community engagement to the implementation and maintenance of polio eradication programs in affected regions, including Afghanistan and Pakistan, the only countries that continue to report cases of wild poliovirus.
The funding also allows Rotary to help aid emergency response for polio outbreaks, and in late 2024, Rotary committed US$500,000 to support the first round of a two-round polio vaccination campaign in Gaza following confirmation of a 10-month-old child who contracted polio in the region.
Polio—a paralyzing and sometimes deadly disease—will become the second human disease in history to be eradicated, and this critical funding ensures that efforts to protect children in at-risk countries continue.
“For 40 years Rotary has remained steadfast in our commitment to ending polio for good, and the Gates Foundation partnership renewal underscores the importance of this effort,” said Rotary International President Stephanie Urchick. “With gratitude to the Gates Foundation, we remain resolute in delivering on our promise of a polio-free world.
Canadian Rotary members have contributed US$50 million of the more than US$2.9 billion Rotary has committed to fighting polio and countless volunteer hours since Rotary launched its polio eradication program, PolioPlus, in 1985. In 1988, Rotary joined in partnership with the World Health Organization, UNICEF, and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to form the GPEI. The Gates Foundation and Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance later joined. When the initiative launched, there were 350,000 cases of polio every year, but thanks to the GPEI’s efforts, in partnership with world governments—including Canada’s which most recently pledged CAD$151 million to the GPEI and has committed more than CAD$1 billion to date as demonstration of its longstanding, unwavering support for polio eradication—the incidence of polio has plummeted by more than 99.9 percent.
