Guest Speaker: John Peacham - Cows for Cambodia
John provided a short history on Cambodia, which was a dominant power in its region in the 1800s. The Vietnam conflict caused considerable grief in the ealy 1970s with a civil war and American bombings. From 1975-1979 the anarchic Pol Pot regime practiced genocide on large parts of the better educated population. 2 million people were pushed out of capital Phnom Penh into the country where many perished, particularly the elderly. Vietnam invaded Cambodia to stop its incursions late in 1978 and successfully removed Pol Pot. Through the Khmer Rouge, Cambodia became one of the most impoverished nations in Asia and remains so today. Improvemnents in the economy are now slowly emerging
Cosi Costello while on holiday decided to help. It started with the donation of a cow. His charity has establised a Cow Bank whereby when a cow calves, the progeny is gifted to a needy family, the next calf stays with the farm and the following calf is also gifted (alternate). All the cattle are regularly inspected and vaccinated.
John travels to Cambodia as part of a volunteer team which involves itself in building houses and schools, in teaching, helping on the farm and assisting local families. At the outset, there is an orientation tour before the hard work begins.The charity owns a farm near Siam Reap and runs a school there which has grown to 400 students with 5 teachers employed through the fund. 30 of its students have gone onto university. Children in that area will commonly attend a Cambodian school in the morning and the charity school free of charge in the afternoon where they learn English and gain a broader uderstanding of economic opprtunities (helped by the visiting volunteer team). Treats like icecream, swimming pool and movies are much appreciated. Another school will be opened in November, funded by Australian Outdoor Living. Blaze Aid has helped with farm fencing and the stock yard has been financed and supervised by an Australian cattle farmer. Cosi has the ability to gain favors from Australian businesses.
There is pleny of work on the farm for the team with its cash crops, cattle, goats and pigs. In addition to teaching, family liaison and farm work, the team conducts a Rice Run on the last day of its visit. Australians donate $50 for a large bag of rice destined for the neediest of families and have the pleasure of seeing its distribution together with their words of encouragement on Facebook. More bulls and cows are being imported from Australia to strengthen the gene pool and provide wider opportunities. John reflected on the joy and satisfaction he derives from these trips which are self funded. Garry Taylor expressed similar sentiment from his 3 months as a volunteer teacher in Cambodia.
John was applauded for his address and volunteering efforts.

President John advertised the upcoming film fund raiser Take My Hand on 8 September at the Regal Theatre with proceeds to Mental Health. No one has as yet indicated that they will attend the Norwood Rotary Club's 70th anniversary celebration on 1 September.
Jerry Casburn and Briony spent last week working at Calperum. He canvassed a visit in February, hopefully involving a largish contingent of Unleyites...... Volunteering at Calperum is a labor of love and maybe we have a plan which mixes fun and achievement in large doses. Eucalyptus abounded thanks to Briony and 10 sprigs were won in a free raffle.
Ken Haines is battered and bruised after a bad fall.
Paul Duke advised that ROMAC will be bringing a Solomon Islands lad suffering from blood vessel tumors into Adelaide next weekend (fingers crossed) and another on September 20 to fix his club feet - he may have to stay 3 months.....help needed.
Chris Davis thanked all those who had helped with the distribution of the Pride of Work update letter to businesses on Unley Rd. Can members who checked the email addresses of these businesses provide the detail to him. There will be a follow-up for numbers attending next week's networking meeting, as there will be for those attending the POOTY ceremony and luncheon the following week.
The SA Police Officer of the Year perpetual trophy is full and a new one is being assembled but Chris cannot locate a metal Rotary wheel badge for insertion...........any ideas?
Wendy Andrews expressed regret at being unable to fulfil her debating duties last week due to ill health and has asked for the debate to be rescheduled.......think she wants the girls to give the boys a pasting.
Bronwyn Kenny and her brass ensemble will play encouraging music (eg Chariots of Fire) for participants in the City to Bay Fun Run at the corner of Leader St and Anzac Highway on 15 September. They are there from 8-10.15am. She needs help to erect the club's marque for shelter. Ken and John offered......maybe more as the day approaches.
Stephen Baker organised Marie to replace Judi at the Thrift Shop on Saturday morning.
Rhonda Hoare has 100 bags of lollies which were meant to be distributed at the YFR film event......maybe could be used for the Carols?

Rotary Club in Mpika continues work of Malaria-Free Zambia

When we launched Partners for a Malaria-Free Zambia (PMFZ) in March of 2021, one of our objectives was to establish a Rotary club in at least one of the districts we would be serving. On 15 June, that objective became a reality with the chartering of the Rotary Club of Mpika.
This milestone is particularly significant as it coincides with the 30 June closing of the Programs of Scale project and its hand over to the Rotary Healthy Communities Challenge. The timing couldn’t be more perfect as the establishment of the Rotary Club of Mpika gives us hope that our initiatives in Mpika and surrounding districts will be sustained under its stewardship.
The journey to this moment has been anchored on the collective effort and dedication of the residents of Mpika, members of the Rotary Club of Kasama, Past Assistant Governor Martha Lungu, and myself. Special mention is due to our selfless District 9210 Governor Gabriel Chipara who has been a constant source of guidance and support to the steering team from the very beginning. In fact, DG Gabs, as we fondly call him, traveled all the way from Harare, Zimbabwe to Mpika in the northern region of Zambia early this year to encourage the then-prospective members of the club. His support and encouragement have been a driving force behind this achievement.
DG Gabs also made the long trek up north to officiate at the charter night. The PMFZ project through Malaria Partners Zambia supported the orientation training of all prospective members, ensuring they are well-prepared to uphold the values and mission of Rotary. Throughout the life of the project, Rotary volunteers have been at the heart of our advocacy, mentorship, and technical support efforts. Their contributions have been invaluable in driving forward our mission to combat malaria and improve health outcomes in the region.
Throughout its life, the project has strengthened existing Rotary clubs in Zambia and contributed to their growth and sustainability. The project has engaged more than 130 Rotary and Rotaract members from across the country. PMFZ played a key role in integrating members of the newly chartered Rotary clubs of Solwezi and Samfya, enhancing members’ Rotary experience.
In addition, PMFZ has inspired and contributed to successful small grant applications from Malaria Partners International for the Rotaract Club of Lusaka and the Rotary clubs of Samfya and Kasama. Their efforts are crucial in sustaining the gains achieved by the project.
To us, the charter of the Rotary Club of Mpika is timely and significant for the sustainability of our work in Muchinga province. Having laid the foundation for a healthier, malaria-free future, we will continue to support and nurture the new club, ensuring that the seeds we have planted grow into a robust and vibrant force for good in Mpika and beyond.
