Jason welcomed the DG, Bronwyn, and Di Clements
He asked Bob Mills to inform about former member Jeff Nankivel who recently died at the age of 93:
Jeff joined Unley Rotary on 22 April 1966 with classification Real Estate. He held a number of positions in the club, including as President, was on a range of District committees and a recipient of Paul Harris Fellow. He was District Governor in 1983/84, the 6th from our club to hold that position.... a commanding figure.

Bob Mills introduced Tim who joined RC Adelaide East in 1990 where he served in a range of positions. In 2001 he became an Assistant Governor for District 9500, and was involved with a number of District Committees. In 2009 he changed clubs to RC Kidman Park and in 2014 to RC Coromandel Valley....he holds a PHF with sapphire pin. In real life Tim is an audiologist who practiced at the RAH before starting his own private practice. He has taken a hearing specialist team to Tonga. Shelter Box has been one of his keenest endeavours. His passions include Army Reserves, military history and his family of Bronwyn, 5 children and 5 grand-children.
District 9520 has 48 clubs and 1200 members.....when it combines with 9500 the new district 9510 will cover a third of Australia and much of the Murray Darling basin which is under considerable stress.
RI President Mark Maloney has been emphasising the core values of Rotary which are Service, Fellowship, Diversity, Integrity and Leadership. The main themes of the new 5 year strategic plan include:
- grow Rotary to enable higher performance. There are a number of new membership models and club structures to help.
- the need to complement not compete with each other
- viable leadership enhances business life
- there is a need to strengthen our relationship with the UN which we helped form after WW2.
Tim stressed the need for progress and change.....this the opportunity to regenerate Rotary. We have been fortunate that the loss of members in mature economies has been balanced by growth in developing countries. We need to utilise technology far more effectively eg:
- Sustaining Technology like the Rotary Learning Centre and Rotary Club Central
- Disruptive Technology (Kodak example) of increased innovation and greater flexibility. Pioneering of Rotary Nomads, Passport Clubs and the Mitchigan ex-servicemen's club are good examples, as is partnering with Rotoract.
The next RI conference will be in Hawaii in June 2020 and our District's will be in Mildura in March with the theme 'The Rivers Run from the Outback to the Sea'
In summing up Tim said....Dream big.....Take Action....Achieve
Bronwyn Klar (or more accurately, lovely Bronwyn according to Jason) spoke about her mission during this year, namely to promote Shelter Box. On her family tree is a Mayor of Unley in the 1800s. Shelter Box was the first outside organisation partnered by Rotary. A video was shown of a devastated part of the Philippines which had been assisted. The boxes are tailored to meet the special needs of each particular area....solar and water cleansing are now common. In 2018 some 210,000 people were assisted and the aim is to increase this to 1 million by 2025. Bronwyn mentioned that SB had been nominated for a Nobel Prize this year. A special photographic collection by Mike Greenslade has been put together in book form as part of the fundraising. Dial up Shelter Box and buy big!
Tim and Bronwyn were thanked by acclamation.

Heather Kilsby exhorted members to join her 10am next Friday at the Unley Shopping Centre for the coffee and chat session.
Trevor McGuirk spoke about the colouring-in competition for kids aged 4-10 in schools throughout Unley as part of the Carols....would like ideas for prizes
Bob Mullins explained the gathering point for the visit to Parliament House will be on the steps there at 5.45pm. At last count there were 26 acceptances
ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
The President declared the meeting open and Treasurer Pam Trimmer delivered her report. As at 30 June 2019 total equity was $84,527 including the term deposit and CSI. Thrift shop profit for 2018/19 was $22,454 and the membership account in surplus due to Jerry's efforts.
Sorel Coward announced the results of the election of office bearers for 2020/21......by some miracle there was one nominee for each spot:

The meeting then endorsed this very fine body of talent and gluttons for punishment.....welcomed with applause.
Finale
We need to check Valerie's sleeves for dodgy cards as she again scored, this time with the big bucks, and Fay won the slimming chocolates. Bob Laws and Patsy are enjoying birthdays this week. Jerry was happy to have made over a 1000 bucks on the Bunnings BBQ. Alex was pleased with his 31 years of partnership bliss. Bob and Genese topped him with 58 years....but we do need to check with the ladies to see if both pass the Rotary 4 way test. Jason was looking forward to marking 75 exam papers. Mavis liked Jerry's letter to the editor.

Our erstwhile wine labellers enjoyed the foray out to the Barossa on Saturday. Bottles labelled, Rotarians plastered, weather intoxicating.

DAILY MOVES
Daily Moves is a free supportive physical activity program for adults aged 65 years and above. The program aims to encourage participants to move their bodies daily for 30 minutes. Daily movement, including things like taking out the bins, can go a long way to maintaining independence, preventing frailty, managing chronic pain, keeping us socially connected, lifting our mood, along with many other benefits.
Daily Moves is available for residents in the following council areas:
- City of Burnside
- Campbelltown City Council
- City of Norwood Payneham & St Peters
- City of Prospect
- City of Unley
- Town of Walkerville.
On entry to the program, each participant will undertake a free physical assessment and goal setting session, which will be used to create an individualised Daily Moves Plan. This plan will provide some suggested activities for participants based on their interests.
If they choose to, participants will also receive regular support, encouragement, mentoring and follow up assessments along the way. Or participants may wish to work at their own pace and provide feedback to the Daily Moves Team when they feel they have accomplished their goal.
As additional support participants will also receive invitations to attend educational seminars, workshops and demonstrations.
One on one support (exercise physiology, personal training, support workers, carer respite etc.) and modified activities will be provided to identified participants on an as needs basis, free of charge.
No My Aged Care referral is required for this program, just phone the team.

Artists unite to help The Bahamas rebuild

Julien Believe, singer, songwriter and Rotarian, performs at the Rotary International Convention in Hamburg. Julien is collaborating with other artists and Past RI President Barry Rassin on recovery efforts in The Bahamas.
Three years ago, I penned “I Believe in You,” along with my amazing team, with one purpose in mind – to inspire and motivate. It is a timeless song for anyone that needs a moral boost or just a little nudge to say, “you matter.” After the devastation of Hurricane Dorian in both Abaco and Grand Bahama, it was only fitting that I release ”I Believe in You” with a few tweaks. My fellow country mates needed help but most importantly they needed HOPE. This song is designed to create a sense of hope, strength and assurance in knowing that we, as a nation, will live up to being strong.
My team and I got on the phone with some of the Caribbean’s top artists and created the “We Are the World” of the Caribbean. “I Believe in You” represents solidarity and unity amongst each artist and their willingness to band together to help a brother or sister in need. This song declares not only love of country but the Caribbean at large. Almost every island has experienced the powerful force of mother nature and witnessed firsthand the sheer destruction of natural disasters, but we haven’t seen anything of this magnitude in a while, if ever.
Some lost their homes, their loved ones and some lost their lives. Spirits were broken. I did what I do best – I used my voice to spread love, hope and belief in the fact that “this too shall pass.” I sang words that I knew would help ease the blow, if only for a minute. Music has a way of getting you through, a way of hugging you when arms just won’t do, a way of capturing the essence of your emotion when words cannot.
“I Believe in You” drives awareness to the devastation and tugs at your heart for a call for action to help, assist and give to those in need. Many organizations, including Rotary clubs, donated their time, efforts, money, and energy. I figured I must do my part to spread love, hope and inspiration through my voice. This song is a tribute to the resilience of the Caribbean Spirit in the face of insurmountable odds.
I stand hand in hand, side by side, with my brothers and sisters affected by this storm directly or indirectly and I’m asking my fellow Rotarians to do the same. I’m also grateful for Aliv, which has been a major contributor to this effort by donating time, effort, and energy to ensure the Bahamian people understand we are all supporting them. I pray that this song touches the heart and soul of each person. I hope that my message is heard around the world to drive awareness not only to the devastation of Hurricane Dorian but that the lyrics to “I Believe in You” touches anyone going through anything they feel is too hard to bear.
Support disaster recovery and rebuilding efforts in the Bahamas and elsewhere through the Rotary Disaster Response Fund.
