Guest Speakers: Kirsty Wildy and Irene Jones - The Hospital Research Foundation and Road Home
Chairman Nathan White introduced Kirsty and Irene. Kirsty joined HRF at the RAH in 2018. Prior to that she had worked for 15 years in Newscorp in a range of roles including customer service. Irene's involvement with Road Home began in 2015. Prior to that she had spent 20 years in the performing arts, much of the time with the State Theatre Company. Both love the work they do, like to read and spend time with friends.
Kirsty explained that the logo of HRF is Together Fight...to save lives. All the money raised through donations and their well-known lottery goes to medical research and related projects, some of which are funded directly, and others through the 10 charities they support, like Road Home. In 2019 $24m in funds were allocated; $157m covering 50 research fields over the last 15 years. Cancer research is a large recipient. For every $1 donated there is another $4 raised through the lottery for life saving research.
Road Home was formerly the Repatriation Foundation at Daw Park Hospital. It was dedicated to the health and well-being of returned servicemen suffering mainly from PTSD in Ward 17. The care team at the Repat provided practical mental and moral support. The new mental health facility at Glenside is the Jamie Larcombe Centre named after a South Australian soldier who fought in Afghanistan. It is soon to become the Australian Centre for Excellence for Post Traumatic Stress providing hospital facilities, care and research.
There are a number of help programs including Wellbeing covering sport and physical activities (including the Invictus Games), and the Arts....patients displaying talent are encouraged to enter the Napier Waller Art Prize competition.
PTSD is common in many first responders to emergency situations. The Glenside facility has now been expanded to emergency service personnel. The HRF donated $200,000 to help 70 CFS volunteers rebuild after the catastrophic fires, with physical and mental support. Two current research projects are:
- examining stress response from children whose parent has served on the front line
- a framework for Invictus style participation
Road Home is to be renamed Military and Emergency Services Health Australia on Remembrance Day this year..........this is a lot better. Kirsty and Irene were thanked with acclamation.

Induction of Haythem Raslan
Stephen Baker introduced Haythem who came to Australia at age 7 with his family from Lebanon. Work with his family started at age 11, juggling with school and sporting activities. Haythem has spent most of his working life in the hospitality and building industry. A number of us met him at Tiffins-on-the Park where he was a great help. He married Suzan in 1985 and two daughters followed. He has artistic talent....remember the picture he painted of butterflies showing flags of every country in the world. He has been displaying his paintings for a number of years at the Glenelg Gallery.

Haythem was inducted by President Sorel and joins the Peacham International team. Stephen will be his mentor. Haythem was warmly welcomed into the club without the normal pre-Covid hugging and kissing. Haythem thanked the club.
Spots
Jerry Casburn urged everyone to suck their neighbours and friends into our wine fundraiser.....makes a lot of sense given the state of the world.
Valerie Bonython would like to see some of those raffle books come back with the $100 in cash.....all tickets need to be accounted for. Perhaps each book should have had a detection chip enclosed.
Rhonda Hoare arranged for some Thrift Shop swaps for herself and Judi Corcoran with John Peacham and Jerry Casburn on Saturday 26 September. Wendy volunteered to do Ken's spot on this Saturday while he is cremating the sausages at Mitre10.
Finale
On the gambling front, Fay won the big bucks (which were missing) and Suzan Raslan the fruchocs.
Sorel closed the meeting with her thoughts on missed opportunities......almost on time.
Footnote....the winner of the slab auction is Sorel for an undisclosed price.
Another footnote....evidently the club was given a District citation but it may only be a rumour as it is yet to be announced.
