Welcome back from the Solomon Islands Fay Reid
Guest Speaker: Jerry Casburn - Opening of Pukatja Dialysis Clinic
Last week Jerry went to the clinic opening at Ernabella on the SA border with NT, 5.5 hour drive south from Alice Springs. Purple House is a NFP organisation set up with proceeds of an aboriginal art exhibition in 2000 to look after those with diabetes. Our indigenous population suffers 34% higher kidney disease than the general population due to genetics. In 2004 the first Purple Heat dialysis clinic was established in Kintore and now there are 18 clinics in NT and SA with Pukatja being the latest. There is also a Purple House dialysis bus visiting remote communities.

A Rotary Global Grant of A$223,000 was raised to outfit Pukatja with 4 dialysis machines, and supply water and filtration units, chairs, furnishings and nurses quarters fit-outs. Among several Australian Rotary clubs which participated Waikerie and Unley from SA contributed strongly as did clubs from Kansas Missouri (global grants require an external Rotary partner). Sarah Brown from England is the dynamic CEO of Purple Heart. Purple Heart is self-funded through Medicare.
Those with severe kidney disease require dialysis for 3 hours at a time, which allows the blood to be filtered 7 times, every 2-3 days. The official opening went well with 150 guests and local member Warren Snowden 'cutting the ribbon'....he was very praiseworthy of Rotary's efforts. It has been named the Kinyin McKenzie Dialysis Centre. There is a TAFE in Ernabella worth visiting. Some funds are now being raised to improve the outdoor area.
All in all it has been a very worthwhile project which is improving the quality of life for those affected and their families.
Jerry was thanked by applause.
Updates
Jason Booth on drought relief. Members had suggested the club take an active stance on drought relief but were disinclined to chip into a bucket of money without knowing how it would be used. A note had been circulated re donations through Bendigo Bank. There is also a pathway through RAWCS. Valerie suggested that the CWA has a proud history of assisting farmers in distress and it was agreed that she contact them to see how best we can help. Jason's mother lives in fire rocked Taree - he suggested her recipe for rock hard scones would be of little relief value!
Greg Mcleod on Thrift Shop lease The 5 year lease for the Thrift Shop is about to expire. Greg and Graham Beckett were charged by the committee with to negotiate a new lease. There is a preference to stay where we are but evidence would suggest that a rent of about $34,000 is above the current market with the increase in vacancies on Unley Road. Negotiations for a lower rent have temporarily stalled and an independent valuation (required at year 6 under the 5+5 lease) is being organised.
Spots
Pam Trimmer exhorted everyone to participate in the Paris Flea Market at the Thrift Shop on 22-23 November; Steve Finos will be serving croissants and coffee in a French beret. There is a need for a permanent volunteer for the afternoon of the first Saturday in the month. John Kikkert offered to help next month.
Bob Mullins attempted to finalise the list of people (limited to 30) visiting Parliament House on 27 November. We are meeting on steps of Parliament House at 5.45, dinner at 6pm followed by a tour. We need attendees to prepay the $35 covering the meal and drinks because the club will be charged for the number specified.
Jerry Casburn reported a profit of $1836 from Sunday's BBQ at Bunnings. He asked those involved in the wine labelling to be at Langmeil by 10am on Saturday: cases will be brought to the meeting next week for pick-up.
Heather Kilsby said her Unley Shopping Centre chats would vigorously pursued (next one Friday week) despite only Wendy coming to the last one.
Stephen Baker said the Carols were on track. Help was being provided to convenor Dennis Liddle who has been ordered to rest after his triple bypass. Everyone will be given a job on the day.
Finale
Rhonda Hoare won the big bucks with a ten of hearts (considerably better than the editor's ten of clubs) and Valerie again won the chockies. Some calendars (hopefully 2020) were also scored. Valerie had a birthday yesterday.....the singing of happy birthday was awful. Within a few days Bob Mullins and John Russell will be renewing their vows. Jerry was happy that the wine sales would add $2000 to the membership account. He was also chuffed with a letter to the editor in the 'Tiser comparing the happy service and cheap snags dispensed by Unley Rotary at Bunnings with the outrages prices of food and drink at Adelaide Oval. Rhonda was saddened by the recent Sydney Morning Herald article that proclaimed the quality of Australian education had slipped to 39 out of 41 developed countries...……...time for a Royal Commission!
The meeting closed eventually.....maybe we need an 8pm gong after which no further business will be conducted. Evie and Charli were exemplary!

Rotary News
Mission Pink
Using a Global Grant from The Rotary Foundation they developed a program that they delivered to 30 schools and over 15,000 young women. In the past year, the schools have seen decreased absenteeism and drop-outs and classroom performance has increased.
The menstrual health and hygiene for adolescent girls was an integral part of Mission Pink Health and Wash in schools project undertaken by the Rotary Club of Chandigarh Midtown, India.
The activities with the project included:
- Seminar to sensitize the girl students about the importance of menstrual cycle, Do's and Don'ts, facts and myths and nutrition tips.
- Installation of sanitary vending machine and incinerator
- Providing free sanitary napkins to students
- Mineral supplements, Iron folic acid and deworming for management of anaemia
- Awareness how the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination prevents cervical cancer.
After working with the schools to assess the need, the club found some international partners and received a Global Grant from The Rotary Foundation. The grant was for $42,000.
A training seminar was provided to 43 teachers in the participating schools. A total of 30 schools and over 15,000 young women participated in the project
The impact of Mission Pink has been significant. Classroom performance has improved, absenteeism has decreased, and dropouts have gone down. The word has spread about the success of this project and more and more schools are implementing social health programs for all women.
As the female students improve their education there have been some additional benefits the club has financed. After school programs have been introduced to provide training in-home care nursing, basic computing, medical record technician, etc. A few girls have decided to pursue higher education in arts, engineering etc. and the club is providing scholarships,
We would like to expand our project by providing biodegradable pads for girls for environment protection and also free immunization against cervical cancer. The club will be encouraging support and also increase our reach into the community.

The Tale End.……
What’s in a name ?
A psychiatrist was conducting a Group Therapy Session with five young
mothers and their small children. "You all have obsessions," he
stated. "I am concerned that these individual obsessions are going to
impact your children."
To the first mother, he said: "Mary, you are obsessed with eating.
You've even named your daughter Candy."
He turned to the second Mum: "Ann, your obsession is with money. It
manifests itself in your children's names of Penny, Goldie and Frank.
He turned to the third Mum, "Joyce: Your obsession is alcohol. This
too shows itself in your children's names: of Brandy and Sherry. You
have even called your cat: Whisky."
He then turned to the fourth Mum: "June: Your obsession is with
flowers. Your girls are called Rose, Daphne, and Poppy."
At this point, the fifth mother, Kathy, quietly got up from her seat,
took her little boy by the hand and whispered: "Come on Dick, this
guy has no idea what he's talking about, grab Fanny and Willy, we're
leaving..."
