President Trevor's Announcements
President Trevor was in shock because he had lost his favourite box brownie camera and his watch had run out of juice. As a result his announcements were brief....appreciation was expressed for those who had participated in the Detmold and Bunnings BBQs, Facebook, Jerry, the Thrift Shop and other volunteer effort.
Guest Speaker - Ryan Midgley: White Ribbon
At a cracking pace Rachel Harding welcomed Ryan who manages two Eldercare facilities. Formerly he was the chief radiographer at the Lyell McEwen Hospital. He is an ambassador for
White Ribbon Australia which is part of a global movement of men and boys working to end men's violence against women. He has just completed a fund raising effort with the Mawson Trail Epic and is married with 3 sons.
Ryan explained that the Mawson Trail Epic involves trail bike riding over testing terrain from Adelaide to Blinman, a distance of 938k....sponsorship raised $15,000 this year. Unfortunately the weather turned sour with a deluge on May 2, causing difficulties for riders and machines. He was invited to be an ambassador for White Ribbon in 2016 to which he readily agreed. Eldercare has 1500 employees, mostly women.
Domestic violence is widespread - 24 women were murdered by their partners last year and it is estimated that 1 in 3 women have or will be subjected to violence in their homes. This violence results in physical harm but also comes in other forms where unwarranted control and demeaning behaviour is exercised.....it is deep rooted and often fuelled by alcohol and drugs. The economic cost is estimated at $22b annually in Australia. White Ribbon was established by 3 Canadians in 1989 reacting to a spate of women being murdered. Here in Adelaide the annual breakfast attracts the largest gathering anywhere in the world.
Respect for women is the key issue. It is a workplace issue. The White Ribbon tools applied are primary prevention, leadership, community engagement and cultural change. Change in thinking has to take place from an early age and the Breaking the Silence program in schools is a driver.
Ambassadors spread the message that violence against women is unacceptable. That message needs to be sustained.....keep the conversation going across the community. Service clubs like Rotary do and can play an important role.
Heather Kilsby mentioned the three WR programs sponsored by our club during her year as President.
Ryan was thanked by acclamation.
RYPEN
Leonie Kewen introduced RYPEN participant Rodger Luomeng who comes from China, lives here with his mum and is a Year 9 student at Glenunga High School where his favourite subjects are chemistry and maths. Rodger provided a brief description of his RYPEN experience....the sessions on leadership, careers and the environment worked well for him.
INDUCTION OF JOE EVANGELISTA
Jason Booth introduced Joe on behalf of Fay Reid. Joe works at Qantas as a technical engineer in aerospace logistics and as a TAFE lecturer. Fay has been thankful for his support on her Solomon Islands project, and describes Joe as hardworking, discerning, always willing to give a hand, and a great family man.
Joe has been appointed to the International Committee, has been given the designation of air electronics technical specialist and will have Trevor as his mentor.
Joe was enthusiastically welcomed into the club.

Patsy Beckett announced that she would cease collecting stamps for the lady in Victoria who is about to retire and that 600gms is soon to be sent as the last consignment. Please ensure all stamps are in her hands by next Tuesday. $13,000 has been raised. Maybe a future club activity?
Ken Haines reported a banked profit of $830 from yesterday's Bunnings BBQ.
Jason Booth confirmed that the club changeover will be held 6 for 6.30 on Tuesday 25 June at the Nepalese Taste of Himalaya restaurant 489 Brighton Rd, Brighton.
Wendy Andrews put out a call for volunteers for the fundraising Bridge Day being run with RC Morialta on Sunday 2 June....she needs 6 people, 2 as early as 9.20am and 4 more from 11 to 2pm. More raffle prizes would also be appreciated.
Bob Mullins asked for help to install a wifi modem at the Thrift Shop.....Sorel, anxious to assist world wide surfers, promised she could do it standing on her head in the shower.....this we want to see!!
Reno Elms provided a video explaining the importance of the Red Shield appeal and related how well our club had supported the cause with its doorknocking, donations and the matching grant. Reno came armed with his credit card machine.
Sorel Coward on behalf of Jerry outlined the ventures of RC McLaren Vale with its tree planting on June 2 and RC Seaford bats project. Sorel will be accompanying Seaford club to Calperum on June 7. She has emailed club members seeking support for her walk through Kangaroo Island with proceeds to Shelter Box.....aiming to raise US$2000.

The best table snared the two card prizes with experienced winner Christina nabbing the cash and David M the chocolates. Birthday anniversaries this month include Geoff Hill on 9th, John Russell 23rd and Jason Booth 24th. Happiness prevailed.

Medical pilgrimage in India treats thousands

In January, our club organized a medical mission to provided life-saving health care to the rural and tribal community of Gandevi in the western part of India. Our mission consisted of 26 visiting doctors and paramedics from an association of Indian physicians of Northern Ohio, USA. It was our third trip to Gandevi since 2010, and among 29 medical missions we have organized with the help of grants from The Rotary Foundation. It was pure pleasure to see the smiles on the faces of thousands of recipients, and on many of the team members as well.
We are a club made up mostly of millennials, located in the Gujarat state of India. In advance of this latest trip, teams of Rotarians from my club organized screening camps in nine villages, selected on the basis of need and availability of local resources.
More than 6,200 patients were examined, diagnosed, and given free medicine during the nine screenings. We have a track record of providing free follow-up care to those screened during our “medical pilgrimage projects.” A total of 784 patients were identified for further care or checkups at four hospitals including Haria L.G. Hospital, Vapi; Yashfeen Cardiac Hospital, Navsari; Gram Seva Trust Hospital, Kharel; and Jamnaba Hospital, Bardoli. We received a $100,000 global grant from The Foundation which allowed us arrange the care at no cost.
Through 31 March, 97 surgeries or biopsies had been performed to remove gallbladders, treat appendicitis, correct hernias and address kidney problems, among other procedures. In addition, cardiologists performed 11 heart valve replacements, 9 coronary bypass surgeries, and 25 angiograms. Ophthalmologists at Lilavati Mohanlal Shah Eye Hospital in Navsari also performed 151 cataract surgeries.
We are extremely grateful to our friends in the Rotary Club of Bakersfield, California, USA, and to Rotary District 5240, who were our international partners on the global grant. District 3060 also supported us with money from their District Designated Funds, and District 1260 and the Rotary Club of Mississagga Center, Canada, partnered with us.
We do not have the words to properly thank The Foundation, our partners, and all who helped with our medical pilgrimage project. Rotary is allowing us to be an inspiration to others by making a difference in our communities. Thank you Rotary and Rotarians for helping us serve humanity.

Another true story about sin and salvation
A few minutes before the church services started, the towns-people were sitting in their pews and talking. Suddenly, Satan appeared at the front of the church.
Everyone started screaming and running for the front entrance, trampling each other in a frantic effort to get away from evil incarnate.
Soon everyone had exited the church except for one elderly gentleman who sat calmly in his pew without moving, seeming oblivious to the fact that God's ultimate enemy was in his presence.
So Satan walked up to the old man and said; "Don't you know who I am?"
The man replied, "Yep, sure do."
"Aren't you afraid of me?" Satan asked.
"Nope, sure ain't." said the man.
"Don't you realize I can kill you with a word?" asked Satan.
"Don't doubt it for a minute," returned the old man, in an even tone.
"Did you know that I could cause you profound, horrifying, AGONY for all eternity?" persisted Satan. "Yep," was the calm reply.
"And you're still not afraid?" asked Satan.
"Nope," said the old man.
More than a little perturbed, Satan asked, "Well, why aren't you afraid of me?"
The man calmly replied, "Been married to your sister for 48 years."
